Excellent Jim Emerson piece, which is essentially about the importance of good film critics (people who are so often dismissed in this age of message board fueled relativism).

So, what do you think? Ever had a review elevate the quality of a movie, or a movie ruin a great review?

I once wrote a review that elevated an already imposing film to such heights that the editor saw himself impelled to dismiss me.

No one should care about the review really. It's not as if the review came out before the movie.
The review only exists because the movie exists. It's just someone else's opinion.

Fittingly enough, Emerson's reviews of No Country for Old Men and Pineapple Express elevated my appreciation of those films...

I read reviews all the time that elevate my opinions on film, but I've never had a movie ruin a good review, essentially because I don't find a review good if I disagree about the film in question.
