While straight-to-video versions of the R.L. Stine book series have been made, the project will mark the first feature adaptation of the series and could become a franchise for Columbia, which acquired the rights in May.

The Goosebumps series -- which comprises more than 50 books that often pay homage to classic sci-fi/horror movies such as Night of the Living Dead and Invasion of the Body Snatchers as well as the twist endings of The Twilight Zone -- have grossed hundreds of millions for Stine and Scholastic, second only to the Harry Potter series. Stine recently published a new 12-book series, Goosebumps in HorrorLand, and Scholastic plans to launch a video game in the fall.

Moritz has said he likely will cast youngsters for the leads and then include well-known actors in supporting roles, a la the Potter films.


Cool :thumbsup: . I used to read the series every month. Owned every single one and even met R.L. Stine when he came to town for a book signing.

I hope they either do Monster Blood, The Haunted Mask, or Night of the Living Dummy. Say Cheese and Die is another good one. Very creepy. The earlier books were more disturbing because they weren't as kid-friendly. Welcome to Dead House, the first one was downright messed up.

I loved loved loved when they did "The Haunted Mask" episode for that Goosebumps TV show/miniseries thing. Of course, I was like 8.

The number of copycats Goosebumps spawned was indicative of its popularity.

How many of these series do you remember:

Bone Chillers
Spinetinglers
Spooksville
Graveyard School
Shivers
Deadtime Stories
Frightime

and even Stine himself pocketed some nice money for his ghost-written series, The Ghosts of Fear Street, each book written by someone else.

I owned all of the Shivers books because I bought them at a book store for $1.00/book. I enjoyed Bone Chillers as well. They were well-written, at least until original author Betsy Haynes left.

Precisely, but it could still attract a new audience. I just don't know how a kids horror film will work. They worked as a campy TV series (well, the first two or three seasons at least). If they do it campy, it'll be fun.

It's all about nostalgia. Now all the original fans are older and they could make the films PG-13 and attract a huge audience. I know I'd go see them.

The only way this will good is if it has a very similar tone to Gremlins or The Goonies. Stories really don't matter since if you read one Goosebumbs book, you read them all. Also, the poster has to be very misleading, then they are on the right track.

and Night of the Living Dummy were pretty much their main Franchises. Any movie about those books are fine by me

However it would be interesting if they did some type of Grind House style of movie and had maybe 2 or 3 stories.

I don't know why his books haven't been adapted for the big screen sooner. Think of how fun it would be for kids if every October they got a new R.L. Stine movie adaptation just in time for Halloween? These could be very lucrative.

Probably because none of the books is long enough for a regular 90-minute movie. I've read the original series back in the day, and I don't think any of the books would work on big screen. They've done an OK job with the TV-series though. Not sure how you could squeeze more out of this material.

Agreed. I remember a couple years back around Halloween that Cartoon Network was airing the original series, I was in Heaven. :P I don't know how I feel about big screen adaptions though, honestly.

Hollywood has a knack for stretching out a short story into a full-length feature film. Somestimes it actually works.

Yeah, I don't see why they couldn't easily stretch one of these out for a feature length film.
