Post Mark Wahlberg talks The Departed 2
"Mark Wahlberg talked to MTV recently about the prospects of both a prequel and sequel to the Oscar-winning THE DEPARTED.

"We may do another one, because it’s based on a Hong Kong film ['Infernal Affairs'], and there is a trilogy. So we may do a sequel with a new cast, and a prequel and bring back the rest of the guys... They’re [still] developing it... If it can be better than the first, then great. I’ll be all for it. I’m not interested in going for the paycheck. I love ‘Godfather 2’ but, then again, I don’t like ‘Godfather 3.’”"

A prequel won't worked. It worked very well in the Jong Kong version, but that was because the first film was set up a bit differently (the good cop was undercover for ten years...there were more stories to tell). A sequel...I'd be down with if Wahlberg returns and Monahan as the writer.

can they please replace Jack Nicholson this time.

He was not a very god "Don" character or boss character.

who will replace him.

They cannot pick the typical "Don's", Pacino and De Niro

I cannot think of a proper replacement.

an old accomplished actor that can fit into a mob role...

I am getting a blank...

Ray Liotta or Joe Pesci? They both played Mob roles in the 90's. I would say Deniro but he has played one too many mob bosses. Hell maybe Dustin Hoffman he hasn't played too many mob roles.

Joe Pesci is good for a regular stereotypical mob doss.

However if you want more of the Marlon Brando kind, that would be hard.

I'd watch the prequel for sure...but what the hell could the sequel be about? The Adventures of Marky Mark and Arec Barrwin?

He was great, but if it's a prequel, maybe they'll want these guys all ten years younger, and Jack may just be too old to play that part (since he'd be like 75 when it comes out, playing a 60-year-old). I guess he could still do it, and I don't think anyone could play the character like him, but I dunno...

it's stupid to have sequels/prequels to this...it works so well as just this one story. i don't care if the Hong Kong version had two other stories to it.

He really mastered that character, and made it his own, and anyone else would just be trying to immidate him, but I guess that's how Robert De Niro won an Oscar, immidating Marlon Brando.
