Watching trailers today, it seems that there a number of seemingly copy jobs of Meet the Parents.

Early movies about bringing someone home to the family.

- Guess Who = Ashton K comes home with girlfriend to meet the parents - Bernie Mac.
- Mother-In-Law = Jane Fonda + JLO
- Wedding Date = Debra Messing brings home a gigolo for sister's marriage.

That's just some of the early movies I can think of but it is still early.

Probably. Hollywood is scraping the wood from the bottom of the barrel, so a lot of films are splintered messes. They would hate to be a carbon copy, so they throw in some shock twists (Bernie Mac is Ashton Kutcher's dad-in-law, gigolo for something-or-other).

Nah, this genre has been popular ever since Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.

True, but it was re-invented with a movie like Meet the Parents. I still remember this TV show back in 2001 called "In-Laws". I know Dennis Farina and Elon Gold were in it, and it was the next best thing to an exact copy of Meet the Parents. Farina played that "Look, I'm watching you, so don't try any of your shit with my daughter, even if you both are married" father-in-law, and Gold played the "Oh my god, I'm so stupid, because I can't get any respect from my father-in-law, so I'll try and impress him but fail horribly on every account" son-in-law. Funny stuff sometimes, but originality was no where to be found.

But what year was that - about 1968. Has that really been a consisent hot topic ever since?

But your point is noted, not sure if that started it but it is in the same vein.

The topic has potential. It's a situation that people have to go through every damn day.

It's always funny...

I agree, especially when it is funny as the Parents movie, I was just noting the similarity and if it started, these movies, with the Parents movie

Most people also get showers, eat, sleep, drink water, and walk every day too, but I wouldn't want to see movies devoted to any of these subjects.
