A lot of it depends on which users like which films. I mean, Libs likes As Good As It Gets a lot, so the film automatically gets a lot of attention, since she is a major poster. A lot of users have been pimping Se7en for some time now. A Clockwork Orange, loyal and zennier are behind it, Armageddon has some idiots who support it, etc.


So basically, if a major user, or several major users, are behind a film, it will get more notice, and therefore more votes.

Why is Ratatouille's average different depending on whether you count it as 10 plus or 20 plus? And I know for a fact there are films between 10 and 20 votes with ratings better than 3.7...at least according to http://worldofkj.com/Krem/movies.php

So I'm confused. :/

Oh, I just saw this:

weighted rating (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C

where:
R = average for the movie (mean)
v = number of votes for the movie
m = minimum votes required
C = the mean vote across the whole report

hm.

Yeah, that's the formula IMDb claims to use to calculate (but there are definitely more tweaking underneath for the top 250 ranking to fit their likings). The formula itself is pretty good since it should be harder to maintain a high average with more votes and thus should be ranked higher.
