Post Youre take on 2004!
Its almost over, have youre say, i have.

So, before we start on posting next years Box Office news, ill start with a review on the past year:

In January we got off to a slow start, tracking behind the previous year (Jan 2003), when all we had were hits like 'Along Came Polly' ($88 Million) and '50 First dates' ($120 Million), they made enough to call them successful, but nothing near the amount that would be needed to put 2004 on par with 2003, at that stage.

The film that, despite being released in 2003 (dec), dominated January and February headlines was 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King', it grossed around $150 Million from January to the end of its run, helping the Box office of January keep up a little bit better, as last year (2003) had 'The Two Towers' to compete with.

'Return of the King' made the headlines mainly for winning 11 Oscars at the Academy Awards, a clean sweep. This also added about another $15 Million to its total, as hype was, again, generated.

Moving on, on February 26th 2004, quite suprisingly 'The Passion of the Christ' grossed big (understatement) at the Box Office opening to $83 Million. With the help of Easter a month later, it went onto gross $370 Million domestically, and $609.5 Million Worldwide. That is huge for a foreign subtitled religious film. 'Passion' was the saving grace of 2004 in movie sales.

'The Passion' basically takes us up to early summer (may) where 'Van Helsing' was the first of the summer blockbusters, no suprise, it underperformed, grossing $50 Million on opening weekend, to a total of only $120 Million, very poor for the type of film and release date it had. A week later 'Troy' was released, grossing less than 'Van Helsing' with $46 Million, howvever this wasnt a tragic sign, as historical epics arent known for there huge opening weekends, the dissapointing part came later when it grossed $133 Million, which looking at it, is really good coming off a $46 Million opening, but in some peoples eyes it wasnt good as it was expected to do better...however, it made up for that in worldwide sales, generating $496 Million from May 16 to present day.

The summers main attraction was 'Shrek 2', making $108 Million opening weekend and a fucking huge $441 Million total. Worldwide sale are still going for 'Shrek 2', with one last market to open justy before Christmas, however so far its at $880 Million WW. This suprised alot of people, as they thought it wouldperform similarily to the first film, maybe a little better, nobody expected this. However, in hind-sight, all the signs for a $400+ Million grosser were there.

The summers initial dissapointment was 'Harry Potter: The Prisoner of Azkaban', making an amazing $93 Million on opening weekend, but only amassing a mediocre $249 Million total, off of that weekend, studio's would be expecting a film to be making somewhere in the region of $300 - $400 Million dollars, so as you can see, it was a let down. It did pick up legs towards the end of its run, which is what made it get as far as it did to be honest, but it was too little too late. However, its international box office did keep it from becoming a total dissapointment, it grossed over $500 Million!

Released later in the summer, different from the first films early summer release, was 'Spiderman 2', a very good opening at $88 Million, brilliant legs, making $373 Million to date. Its worldwide tally is just below that of 'Harry Potter 3', which is good, as Harry Potter films usually have brilliant worldwide business, making them hard to reach, but 'Spiderman 2's international nd domestic were sufficient, therefore making it impressive at the worldwide box office.

Other big summer releases included: 'I, Robot' making a $52 Million opening, pining towards a hefty $144 Million and an even bigger $350+ Million worldwide tally. 'The Bourne Supremacy' making $52 Million opening, going onto make $176 Million, superb legs. 'Catwoman' failed to grip audiences with a below par $16 opening and a $40 Million finish, not even making $100 Million worldwide, expected to stop at $84 Million or somewhere thereabouts.

Moving onto Autumn films, there were many, not huge grossers, but good legs. 'Collateral' opened with the expected amount for a Tom Cruise film and a R rated picture, with $24 Million, but the legs for this film were amazing, grossing upto $100 Million, thats a multiplier of 4, which is superb for an R rated picture in a theatre count of under 3,000. 'Shark' Tale' made big when it opened with $48 Million, with superb legs once again making $146 Million total, incredibles for a film that opened with that amount in the middle of school term when the films targe audience is children. 'Grudge' also did amazing, making $39 Million opening weekend, following onto gross as much as 'The Village' with $114 Million domestically.

'The Incredibles' dominated November with an amazing $72 Million opening, having great drops each week to get (so far) to $226 Million, expect that to get above 'Harry Potter 3' numbers, both domestically and worldwide. 'The Polar Express has also found an audience, with its traditional christmas outlook, it it pulling in punters by the bucket load, its dailies are getting much better, its $2 Million off $100 Million milestone, and is looking a $300 Million worldwide finish once the christmas holidays have contributed towards its gross.

Just recentley, Nicholas Cage's 'National Treasure' has suprised many with its bigger than normal opening of $35 Million, its now upto $112 Million, critics are suggesting it could go upto $150 Million or more. Oliver Stone's 'Alexander underperformed, and will not make peace with the american audiences due to its arguable bi-sexual scenes and untrue telling of his story. It will make good money overseas though.

All we have left for this year are the holdovers from the past few months to see how they hold up and: 'Meet the Fockers', 'Oceans Twelve' and 'Lemony Snicketts: A Series of Unfortunate Events'. These three in particular i expect to make well over $300 Million together, maybe more.

Anything i should have added... ;)

A fairly good summary, Algren.
I would just point out that Passion set records for February openings and R-rating that probably will not be broken for awhile.

Nice summary. I would have added Fahrenheit 9/11 and The Notebook to though.
