"Paramount Pictures and Steven Spielberg will develop a space travel story about a group of explorers who travel through a worm hole and into another dimension, says Variety.

Spielberg hopes to direct the film, which Lynda Obst will produce.

The project, in a nascent stage, is anchored in real science. It was derived from a treatment by Kip S. Thorne, a Caltech physicist who's an expert on relativity. Thorne is most famous for his controversial theory that wormholes not only exist but can be accessed and used as portals for time travel."

Form the thread title I worried it would be another Apollo 13 borefest. But Spielberg had me at wormhole, it sounds cool, can't wait.

I am positive this will be less boring than Contact.

The tastes aside, this will also be different, since it will be grounded in current research (as mentioned in the article)...whereas Contact was a fairy tale.

Contact's great.

As for this new Spielberg movie, sounds intriguing. I'm a whore for all things space (faring, exploration, the tech behind it), so i really hope this gets made.

Well I don't care what you think about Contact, but Contact was a fantastic science fiction film. It did everything right. It was a book/film that explored the impact on human society based on a (seemingly) non-specific signal coming from space.

Contact was also based in Carl Sagan's research at the time.

Yay, love for Contact! :D

And this film does sound interesting. But if it somehow delays Indy IV at all, then oh yes, there will be blood... (I love that tagline)

While we're on this topic...anyone heard anything about Cameron's Mars Trilogy? Think I've read some years ago that he was interested in doing it.

Except for the act that it forgot to make itself an interesting movie in the process :)
