Well, I thought I'd make this before the Eastwood's double powerhouse of Flags of our Fathers and Red Sun, Black Sand hits the theatres. Eastwood's popularity as a director has risen immensly in the past couple of years as he released two highly-praised films within around a year, Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby. His films have won the Best Picture Oscar and the Best Director Oscar twice (Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby). Mystic River was nominated for both. But he also directed other successful flicks like Absolute Power and Space Cowboys. Personally, I always considered Unforgiven to be a good, but seriously overrated film. My favorite is certainly between Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby, but I give Mystic River the edge because I liked its all-star cast better and the storyline was more interesting up until the end. It doesn't quite have the emotional punch of M$B, but its main themes are quite impressing. |

With Eastwood in it, Million Dollar Baby. The sheer elegance and precision of Eastwood's direction is a joy to watch and the fact that it has the best performance of his career doesn't exactly hurt. White Hunter, Black Heart, The Bridges of Madison County, The Outlaw Josey Wales & Unforgiven would all be up there as well. As director but not star it would probably be Bird, Eastwood's superlative bio of jazz legend Charlie Parker. I saw it twice in some art cinema back in 1988 and left more convinced than ever that if critics persisted in dismissing Eastwood as just some actor turned director then they simply didn't know what they were talking about. As William Goldman put it when he saw Bird at Cannes that year: 'It was by far the outstanding directorial work of the fortnight. The only stigma being Eastwood and our memories of all those action films. How dare he attempt a serious movie? And bring it off. I believe that if Francis Coppola had directed it, frame for frame, the critics would have put him back on top with Woody Allen. And if Allen had done it, they would have elevated him up alongside Welles.' On the other hand I was seriously impressed by the oppressive power of Mystic River so much so that it may just tie with Bird for first place. However I have a feeling Flags of Our Fathers & Red Sun, Black Sand may displace both before too long. ![]() |

Million Dollar Baby, then Bridges... Both Unforgiven and Mystic River are overrated imo (but still good) ![]() Space Cowboys, A True Crime and Blood Work are decent, I guess - I managed to guess the latter's twist way before it was revealed, something that doesn't happen very often with me. I still haven't seen his earlier work... |

I'd say Mystic River is my favorite, with Million Dollar Baby coming in a close second. |

there are some people who really (and I mean really) overpraise him.. but I like him - he's very consistent and makes decent and safe films at the very least... ![]() |

Unforgiven, it's the movie where the directorial (?) influence is most visible |

The Outlaw Josey Wales is a movie I've always had a weak point for. |
