Post Da Vinci Code, Hanks vs. Story
Mr. Hanks has done the best with characters of odd ilk..(ok depp was great in potc)... Let me mention. Forrest, SPR, Castaway and even Ladykillers... But DVC seems to overide on scripted story, stereotypes... Is there room for America's favorite actor to do much with this 'thriller'??

I actually think quite the opposite. For a long time until lately, he's stuck to roles that were more like him. He's essentially played himself for most of his career. A southern accent does not make one suddenyl take on a whole new character.

Not to say he doesn't do it incredibly well, but he's not the character actor that Depp (or others) is.

Having just read the book (The DaVinci Code), I'm really purplexed by the decision to cast Hanks as Langdon. I dunno. The guy in the book was old, but young at heart and said a lot of humurous things and I got the impression he was a rather charasmatic person with a handsome personality (his wittiness during lectures added to that). Hanks just doesn't strike me as fitting that character type, as good of an actor as he can be sometimes. Maybe I'm wrong. He did make a good transformation in the Lady Killers.

I have a feeling I'm not going to like this movie, especially since I don't think the movie can possibly cover the intricateness of the book. I guess we'll see.

Also, I think the only role that really broke off from typical Tom Hanks was Forrest Gump. Saving Private Ryan and Cast Away just felt like Tom Hanks acting. In Forrest Gump I personally saw a transformation. I've always been impressed with his performance in that film, even if I didn't really enjoy the film itself.

PEACE, Mike.

But that's always been true of most big BO draws.
