I got this from IMDB. Kansas City-based AMC Theatres, the No. 2 U.S. movie chain after Regal Theaters, said today (Tuesday) that it plans to set aside 72 screens in 39 U.S. cities to show traditional art-house fare. The exhibitor said that it planned to introduce independent and foreign film fare under a program dubbed "AMC Select." Initial films under the program are due to debut this weekend, including the Al Gore global-warming documentary An Inconvenient Truth and Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion. In an interview with today's Los Angeles Times, AMC CEO Peter Brown said, "We are constantly thinking about how we can get more people to come to the theaters," Brown said. "This is realizing the promise of the megaplex -- we are broadening out the depth and breadth of the [movies] available." The move puts AMC in direct competition with Mark Cuban's Landmark Theatres, which operates 57 theaters with 213 screens, making it the nation's largest art-house chain. I am happy that moviewatchers can use their cards to see art films. For being an AMC employee, I can see arthouse fare for free. |

Nothing against featuring some indies at megaplexes, but... I really, really hope that an "Art-House" division is not in AMC's (or any big theatre chain) future. It kinda takes the charm out of something "different," if that makes sense. |

But it can get very annoying when you live in a city where you don't have those special theatres and can't see the movie you want to see. |

AMC isn't really "building" any arthouse theaters. Just playing more indie films in its larger theaters. |

Actually, the only AMC here in Montreal plays mostly indies already. I'd say about 75% of the films it gets are either independant or foreign. You'll never see a big budget action flick there, so that's usually where I go to see some of the smaller movies. (ex:Capote, Thank you for Smoking, Mrs. Henderson Presents, a slew of foreign movies) |

I wonder if, since they're based here in KC, we'll get a few of those arthouse-designated screens... Not that KC really needs any; we've got at least 4 different retro one-screen theaters that do good at bringing us the arthouse-y stuff (as well as the oldies; Englewood has in the past played stuff like Creature from the Black Lagoon in 3D). This is cool, though. Too bad they didn't do this before The Libertine was in and out of theaters.... Joy |

Hopefully, the newer, bigger AMC in Burbank would be the designated indie and not the haunted and decrepit and liliputian AMC inside the Burbank Mall. |

AMC's have pretty much ALWAYS been really good about getting one or two smaller "art-house" film a week...at least in my experience. :confused: :O Oh well. No AMC's here anyway. |

NO AMC in Orlando? AMC owns Tampa. They are everywhere. Even the 24 screen AMC here holds on to garbage instead of putting in smaller works. They had Thank You For Smoking a few weeks ago, and The Libertine as well, so they aren't *terrible* but it could be better. |

From what I've always seen indie films often play at the larger United Artists theaters. |
