Post First Review of Miami Vice
...and it's a negative review.

Quote:
Last night i was treated a work in progress screening of maimi vice over at the jack london cinema in oakland. The lady stressed that this was a work in progress with uncorrected shots a temp soundtrack and unfinished dialogue.

The film overall was pretty disappointing. for a work print it was 2 hours and 40 minutes long, and i felt every minute of it. the film gets off to a complex and fast start with little comprehension of plot. apparently colin and jamie are on a stakeout in a club when they are called by a former informant telling them that he's sorry but he had to give the feds up. turns out a deal went bad with some undercover feds and they are called in to find.

at this point we really have no idea whats going on, and it dosen't get clearer as the plot goes on. there's alot of unnecessary running around in speedboats; no chases, just boats. li gong is beautiful onscreen but her english is horrible at best and so much of the dialouge is her's that we struggle just to figure out what is going on. Colin's character is extremely underdeveloped and it is one of his worst performances i have ever seen. the sex scene with him and li is the worst i have seen and will have the audience rolling on the floor at colin's facial expressions. the cinematography on the otherhand is excellent. the HDDV really works for the film as a whole, and the shootout scene at the end is amazing, with some of the most realisitic sound effects i have ever heard. What saved this film for me from being aboslutely god awful is jamie foxx's character, who owns the screen whenever he is on. Overall this film might be better once it is trimmed by about 40 minutes, otherwise we're looking at a film that could have been solid, but will just end up putting the audience to sleep.

oh and for a film about the drug cartel and trade, no one in the fucking film uses any drugs, this film is as dry as the desert.

best, MOBIUS 121

Is it seriously 160 minutes long? Jesus Christ.

I'm still excited, though.

Michael Mann has never had a bad film. The 2hr 40mins as mentioned is an unedited work print so a good 20 mins will be trimmed

I wouldn't bank on that. Mann has become fairly self-indulgent with his recent work.

Heat: 170 min
The Insider: 157 min
Ali: 160 min

Collateral clocked in at 120 min, but he didn't script that one like he did the others.

Heat was awesome so its runtime of almost 3hrs was justified. Movies like Goodfellas and Heat needed all that time to maintain their quality. BTW there was no real mention from the reviewer if the film looks like its PG-13 or R

Sex scene + Colin Farrell = R

I'm fairly sure it's going to be rated R. I'll be disappointed if it's not.

This isn't exactly the first review. AICN posted two reviews last month, one negative and one positive. Both also pointed out the film has potential, but needs some serious editing and is no where near being polished.

I'm not worried. Remember how many of the early test screening reviews for Collateral panned it? Michael Mann is notorious for completely changing around the film in the editing room. I remember hearing something about how there were screenings of Ali about four weeks before it came out, yet the final film was supposedly extremely different. I'll wait awhile to pass judgement on this one, with the only thing that worries me being Gong Li. *dolce alert!*

I've been watching MIAMI VICE on TV Land lately and it's hard to believe how old that show is and it's still pretty good for it's time.. HEAT is still Michael Mann's FINEST with LAST OF THE MOHICANS being 2nd and COLATERAL being 3rd.. I have faith in Mann's version of MIAMI VICE and he's nailed the Cast pretty well.. Just remember: When this reviewer says this movie was confusing, you can rest assure, with a title like MIAMI VICE, there will be drugs involved.. Nuff said..
