Peter Segal (The Longest Yard, 50 First Dates) has come aboard to direct Shazam! -- an adaptation of a DC Comics' comic book series featuring Captain Marvel -- for New Line Cinema. The Hollywood Reporter says Segal also will produce along with Michael Ewing via their Callahan Filmworks.

The comic series focused on young Billy Batson, who becomes the superhero known as Captain Marvel when he utters the magic word "Shazam!" The name is an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world as well as their attributes: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.

Writers on the long-gestating project include William Goldman and Bryan Goluboff.

Oh.

Do you watch Justice League Unlimited? I think he was in one episode or something (he joins the league then clashes with Superman over some ideological issue).

It's natural for your generation to have not heard of this character.. Captain Marvel or SHAZAM!! was a cartoon on Saturday Morning's back in the 70's and starred some teen hearthrob at the time as the character.. He rode around in a Winnibago with some old man and had the power to summon Zeus and the God's to become Captain Marvel by yelling out "SHAZAM!!" in which case, a Bolt of Lightening would strike him and he would become Captain Marvel dressed in Orange tights and a Cape that sort of looked like a 2nd rate SUPERMAN.. As far as a movie is concerned, this has BOMB written all over it and no one is asking for this and no one in this generation or even back then, cares about this..

That's right.. And that's also why this is a bad idea to make this into a movie..

Captain Marvel always struck me as the poor man's Superman. Not a bad character in and of itself, but basically Superman trumps everything he can do, including the Clark Kent/Superman psychology.

Which is to say they might make money off this, as it's not like Captain Marvel doesn't have a following, its just nothing compared to Superman.

Agree with BKB, this is not the brightest idea, though perfectly in character for Hollywood.
