Excellent new article just posted over at TORN with quotes from the makers of the EE DVDs.......

NOWPLAYING Mag: ROTK EE Preview

http://www.nowplayingmag.com/content/view/208/2/

Image

In anticipation of the December 14th release, Now Playing Magazine recently spoke about the Extended Edition with Kevin Miller, one of the DVD producers from Pellerin Multimedia Inc.

“Working on these DVDs has been, without a doubt, the most challenging project any of us has ever tackled,” says Miller. “The sheer volume of source material is staggering, even when compared with the total footage generated for the feature films themselves. Peter Jackson shot over six million feet of film for The Lord of the Rings films. Meanwhile, the behind-the-scenes videotape material totals the equivalent of over 14 million feet, [including] over 1,500 hours of behind-the-scenes b-roll footage and 1,200 hours of interviews, plus almost 90,000 pieces of artwork and still photographs.”

Despite the huge undertaking and workload of getting the Extended Editions done, Miller says that it's also been the most satisfying project he and the rest of the PMI group have ever worked on.

“Because as documentarians it's given us the opportunity to truly uncover the inner workings of a film that has become a part of cinema history,” he says. “It's one thing to look at the completed films and marvel at the wizardry. What the EE documentaries do is allow the audience to see that these movies didn't emerge full-blown but were instead the result of a long, iterative creative process [and] that [it] took years to bring these movies to life. Revealing this creative process makes the end result that much more impressive. In other words, [we’re] psyched.”

The process of producing the DVDs was also facilitated by the fact that Peter Jackson himself is a huge fan of the DVD medium and understands and, according to Miller, “appreciates the potential it presents.”

“To exploit the medium to the fullest, Peter made the DVD team an integral part of the production,” he explains. “The documentary cameras were allowed to capture every aspect of the process, from the earliest location scouts in New Zealand to the final frames of film shot for the Extended Edition of The Return of the King – after it had already won 11 Academy Awards. Peter understood from the very beginning that the full story could only be told by providing full access. Peter and his entire team, including the cast, have given us incredible support in the production of the DVDs.”

Also from TORN...a follow up article by nowplayingmag.com:

Yesterday we ran the first part of our exclusive interview with Kevin Miller, one of the DVD producers from Pellerin Multimedia Inc., the company that created the upcoming Return of the King: Special Extended DVD Edition. The highly anticipated set, due for a December 14th release, features Peter Jackson’s new cut of the film with 50 minutes of additional footage, as well as the usual ream of DVD extras. Today, Now Playing continues its chat with Miller.

“We’ve approached the bonus materials like a school yearbook or a time capsule,” the DVD producer says. “Our goal is to provide a forum for the people who made these movies to share their recollections, opinions, insights, and emotions. And Peter is actively involved in every aspect of the production of the DVD, providing creative input and an overall vision.”

Miller explains that the Return of the King set is viewed by Jackson and the PMI team as simply the third volume in the overall Lord of the Rings experience.

“The ROTK: SEDE doesn't just match [the first two films in the trilogy] Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers feature for feature, there's actually over an hour more bonus material on this final installment, including a 32-minutes documentary produced by Peter Jackson and his crew in New Zealand,” says Miller. “These three four-disc sets were designed to stand side-by-side to create one entire entertainment experience... beginning, middle and end.”

The Extended Edition DVDs have been a labor of love for all involved, with work beginning on them at the same time that Jackson began production on the films all the way back in 1999 – with archival materials going back even further. And the extras on these DVDs can attest to that fact.

“There’s footage on these discs from the earliest miniature tests, and the galleries include original conceptual drawings,” says Miller. “Peter documented every step in the production process with the express purpose of creating unparalleled bonus materials on the final DVDs. Our work on each of the three SEDEs takes about a year, but the source materials have been compiled over the span of almost 10 years.”

There was also a learning curve for the group over the course of creating the three DVD sets, a process that began with The Fellowship of the Ring – at which point the Extended Edition was still an untested notion. Of course, the sets proved to be immensely successful, and that allowed Miller and the rest to refine the process of creating them.

“Working on the FOTR: SEDE was about establishing the template, setting the tone, finding the voice,” he explains. “With that foundational work in place, there was more time during the production of the TTT: SEDE to finesse the documentaries and give the disc more polish. The ROTK: SEDE will definitely benefit from the trails we've blazed over the last two years. Just as Peter Jackson used an iterative process to create the films, our director, Michael Pellerin, continually refines and perfects the approach we take to the documentaries and interactive features on the discs.”

Talking to Miller, it is clear that he loves the Lord of the Rings films as much as, if not more than, the fans do. He is a fan, and that’s probably why these DVDs are so exciting.

“With the support of both New Line and Peter Jackson, PMI has been able to push the envelope on what DVD bonus materials can be,” he concludes, before giving a quick hint as to what’s next for PMI. “Currently, [we’ve] moved on to Peter Jackson's re-telling of the story of King Kong.”

Excellent article!

It's so fantastic that LOTR Trilogy has also set the bar for DVD.....the EE's were really the first sets with *very* detailed information about all areas of production.....nothing beats EE DVDs IMO.....

Also, PJ has certainly become a "fans" director....he is trying to incorporate the fans into the experience and this has been taken to a new level with KongisKing.net. Since when have you seen a director provide information about the movie on a weekly basis.....

BTW - has anyone seen the KK documentary regarding the models/SFX of the jungle........it looks absolutely amazing.......could this movie take as back to the days of Jurassic Park 1  ....

I'm having elective surgery Dec. 29 and will be out of commission for about 10 days.
I'm planning on taking a couple of days to watch all three EEs AND watch all the bonus materials (including watching ALL three films with EVERY commentary). It will probably a good three full days to consume all the materials at once.
