With great mannered (apart from over acting) dramatic acting from everyone and Henry Fonda pulls off an iconic performance and really started to solidify his image as Mr. Righteous as he now known by everyone.

A great old classic adventure tales and that really crazy old man gave this film a timeless charm....

Well you here the term film noir and this is the film that really is what that is all about. It really created that whole genre that produced great films like Sunset Blvd and Chinatown.


24. The Maltese Falcon




The name of the film is just so cool and unique in that it should be on everyones list...

Bogart is amazing and he is really cool and classy but not Casablanca classy....
Its a all time favourite of Roger Ebert and it is one of mine.

Its the film that kind of film about a great mystery adventure story with a sexy actress in the middle and a crazy smart bad guy and everyone is smoking and everything is dark and grey and gloomy. If this sounds familiar, this is the film that started it all.

The film has some real continuity issues and flaws but it is really well made and really well acted out.

23. Patton


I find this film to be a laughing riot.


With him firing a pistol at a fighter plane, to him ordering for a weather prayer for greater destruction, to him calling the soviets and Nazi's Sons of bitches every 2-3 mins, to the funny portrayal of British General Montgomery and the random swearing and the "I just don't give a damn" portrayal of General General George S. Patton by George C. Scott.

The opening pep talk sequence is well respected and is seen as a an iconic moment in cinema but its not my favourite part of the film. The film is epic with large battles and amazing authentic sets. You travel Europe and Africa and go on a long journey through this mans life.

The General is shown to be a crazy cold hearted man but smart and daring as well. His antics keep you laughing and the parts where he goes to far (when he slaps a soldier) provide great drama.

Its a perfect Bio-pic with humour, action and drama and its how a proper war film show be made.

22. Schindler's List




A very depressing film from Spielberg and is easily a classic already.

It is a very sad film about perhaps the worst moments in history...


This film is sad, depressing but inspiring as well. Ralph Fines and Liam Nesson are excellent as the villain and the hero. Actually Fines scares me in this film and his character is the worse human being possible. Not a dumb barbaric tyrant, but a smart educated tyrant.

21. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb




The film with boring parts and brilliant parts. There are about 5-6 scenes in the film which are just amazing...

There is the funny exchanges in the War room, to the famous line "Gentlemen you can't fight in here, this is a war room".

Then you have Dr. Strangelove himself who is a laughing riot. From his polygamist fantasy to him not being able to let go of his Nazi past, but accidentally doing the Nazi salute to the US president. To the General with serious but hilarious comments about the on coming nuclear war. Then of course you have the American pilot causing all the trouble and then there was the American general who launched the attack.

The film is the greatest satire ever done... With Peter Sellers playing a triple role, to George. C. Scott as a hilarious and stupid American general. The film is just hilarious and its the comedy that you may not find to be funny in a stupid way like a fart joke. Its a smart form of comedy which is very cleaver in that you will remember those jokes many years after watching the film.


Images show the brilliance of this film. It is black and white but trust me it makes it a million times better.

alright The next two choices some may not like, but hey there were number 1 and 2 three years ago...



20. The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring



I consider this film and Rotk to be equal..
Rotk i saw as the best film ever once, but after multiple viewings i see some major flaws..However this one did not suffer the same fate...


The film has an amazing story and imo will likely become my most favourite of all of the films. The movie is epic and vast but its more personal and is much more adventurous. The film has a Indian Jones feel to it with its journey through high mountain passes and through underground dwarf mines and through mystically forests. The movie is imo the real Lotr film. Rotk was just imo a big massive film and it really started to lose focus of the smaller things. This film is not as huge and does not feature an hour long battle scenes but you feel the real grandeurs and vastness and the sheer mythical beauty of Tolkien's Middle Earth.

Other scenes like the starting was really well made and easily is one of the best starting of a film ever. The acting is superb and in this film is where Gandalf really is at his best. In the other two films he is just a macho old wizard guy ready to kick ass. IN this film he is like the true Gandalf. The fights with fire demon and the white Wizard and many other scenes like Boremoirs death just add to the sheer beauty of this film.

This film really is a modern classic and will imo become the more liked of the films...


To me the shot of the two kings was the best in the whole series.

19. The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King

Your wondering If i love Fotr why is this after it....


Well, it used to be my number 1 film all time but that was after my first two viewings. Around the 5th viewing (at home!!) I started to really notice some akward very slow pointless scenes and after the fighting and war there was nothing else. Meaning the battle was so good, the Frodo thing was like a side story. The movie was to long it was just it felt so long even though its only 20 mins longer then Fotr.

Nevertheless the film is beautiful with easily the greatest battle scenes ever filmed and really many have tried since but they have failed. The battle was amazing and some of the best action scenes ever.... However the ending of the battle was stupid...

However apart from that the film does go a bit downhill. The whole climax felt rushed and they could have made it a full battle rather then a slow motion scenes, where it appears the end is near. I also disliked Gandalf who was now a big macho man instead of a wise wizard anymore. Meaning it was cool when he was beating everyone up but the Gandalf I like is the one where he was telling Merry about Life after death.

Nonetheless, this was the film I was the most hyped for, however I see that status of this film to erode and I hope and I expect Fotr to become the Lotr film we all remember 20 years latter.


If the film ended at the Grey Haven scene it would have been so much better imo.

As a man who perfers old and new cinema....

18. Its a Wonderful Life




Perhaps the only film that really made me cry a lot...

The film is inspirational and really the whole 'go back in time and see how life would be" plot device came from this film and really a million films and shows were made about that.

The film has a magnificent performance from Stewart who really carries the film all by himself really. Apart from the Villain the film has nothing else. Stewart is just so likable and innocent, you can't admire him. The film's introduction was quite stupid and the first 20 mins were a tad boring. However when he start to go back in time the film really gets going and the scene in the Graveyard was really powerful.

The film then has the best feel good endings ever. My heart was never so fuzzy and warm inside and I shed some tears not from despair but of sheer happiness for Stewart's Character.

17. Mr. Smith Goes To Washington




With a all time performance from Stewart and a great performance from Claude Rains, this film may be really old from 1939 and there are some stupid pointless scenes. However when he starts his filibuster the movie is amazing. You are mesmerized by Stewart with his desperate pleas and passionate speeches.

The film is inspiring like most of Stewart's early films and he just seems so right and so innocent in this film. You feel so sad for how such a nice man is made is twisted and destroyed by the mean machines of corrupt government.

Stewart is a whistle blower and he was punished but he fought back by filibustering a bill by talking about it for over 20 hours. It is an emotional ride with a nice ending and you feel happy for him and happy for his cause.

16. Shichinin No Samurai (Seven Samurai)




It was the real creator of the whole hero action genre. You know band of brothers fighting evil. The plot is simple, seven samurai are hired to defend a village from bandits and they of course win with terrible consequences. Now, I must remind everyone that this is Japanese film made in 1954, so there are some scenes and plot devices you may not understand and I don't understand some of the things.


However, the movie is amazing with great characters. With the young hero, anti-hero, amazing special hero, typical hero, reluctant hero, fake hero. It really is the film that transformed the whole concept of the hero in cinema across the globe. Then the whole genre, of the main hero collecting sidekicks like Oceans 13 and in almost every Role playing game. Also how a hero is introduced as someone who does not seem like a hero at all comes from this film. So you just see how massively this just changed action films. Also about the shot of guys on horses looking far away at their goal, is from this film

The action was very advanced for its time even ahead of Hollywood. The fighting scenes are done well, with slow motion death scenes and manipulation of sounds making horseman far away seem close. The camera angles bring us right into the action and with seven samurai and 40 bandits and like 20 villagers it seems your watching an epic battle but in reality there are around 70 people fighting in total.

It is a long film but is amazing, with great scenes. Such as the recruiting of the samurai to the best scene with the individual introduction of each Samuria by name (who gives a cool look and nods) half way through the film, to the fighting and despair to the amazing performances from the anti-hero Samuria.

15. STAR WARS!



It is a great fun film and prehaps the most enjoyable and well made popcorn movie ever made. It was perfectly for entertainment and did so unlike TF with a good story and with some good acting from Alec Puninesses.

However the film is blamed for steering Hollywood from creating complex films like Taxi Driver and Godfather into popcorn blockbusters. It mostly likely did...

However the film is easily a fun enjoyable classic and there are so many memorable and unforgettable scenes...

14. Sangam (union)

It was a film I watched when I was young, but I re watched it recently and I feel in love with the film.



It has the typical bollywood love triangle story line, and it has the musical numbers and the melodrama, but all of it was done in a epic beautiful style. Really when my dad says "old is gold", i see what he means by watching this film. Its a rare masterpiece in film making...

The movie stars Raj Kapoor (on the left) who was like our version of Charlie Chaplain... As you guessed he was the crazy young innocent lover. He also directed the film and gave an all time performance... The 2nd actor (one the right), was Rajendra Kumar who was a simple educated man, who would do anything for his friend. They both were life long friends. They both loved the actress Vyjayantimala who was imo the most beautiful actress from before 1975...

AS you guessed one had to sacrifice his love and it was Rajendra Kumar, but the girl loved him only and did not love Raj Kapoor. Of course the girl was angry and said Raj Kapoor was just a stupid clown, so Raj Kapoor joined the army. He left for war and made a promise with Rajendra Kumar that there should be no one who comes between them. However the girl and Rajendra Kumar love each other and find it hard to keep their promise. Raj Kapoor dies in the army and the other two fall in love and almost marry until Raj Kapoor came back (he didn't really die). They abandon their love and the Girl marries Raj Kapoor as she promised.

They go to Europe and everything is good until the truth finally avails it self...

Well know you see you know what will happen and your heart is just racing until that final scene where there will be a clash of three lovers.

It sound like a great story but a typical one. The movie is perfect with amazing all time acting performances by all three and the dialog is masterful. With amazing music and great scenery the film is a true masterpiece in how just amazing it is. Really it has seamless editing, amazing sounds and music and really only only 25 or so years latter was this finally common for all hindi films.

The movie is also quite sophisticated. While the two honeymoon in Europe, the actress looks hot! Like she dresses up like in Audrey Hepburn way and really you never see an old actress do that kind of stuff. Really she way ahead of the time. Raj Kapoor is just so innocent and he has that resemblance to Charlie Chaplain so it is impossible to not love him.

Easily if you watch Hindi film, this is a must seen masterpiece and it is readily available as it was a massive box office hit and is the highest ranked hindi film on IMDB...

fwiw, I've been following yr list and mostly enjoy it. There's a lot of really good films in there. I just havent been commenting because they come so sporadically, and I dont like to have the last post of a thread for days at a time. But yeah, don't think its going unnoticed. :O

i don't get much time off, but i will finish soon...
after this you get the cream of the crop. Really no film mentioned next is not seen as great...

13. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest



Now this easily has one of the best endings ever and really it is one crazy film...

Really the 1970's were just an amazing decade in film making with so mnay controversial films and really those films really changed Hollywood.

Jack Nicholson gives a great performance in this film and the fact is he was not even suppose to be there. The film is also supported by Louise Fletcher who know represents the whole notion of a cut throat bitch, Nurse Ratched... However you get great performances by Danny DeVito and Brad Dourif as well. Actually the whole crazy cast really added to the film. The native man really was a great character.

The film really transformed our imagination about a mental asylum. It is now a place we really freak out about and really would never want to go. This film has freaked us out really and changed our whole way we think about crazy people, metal asylums and shock treatments.

The film is also way ahead of its time, with Nicholson attacking a older women which is not commonplace in film. Also many of the themes and such were rather disturbing.

This film is seen to be light hearted and prehaps even a comedy on its surface but it becomes one scary, freaky, crazy, disturbing film by the end.

Martin Scorsese 2 best films coming up..

12. Goodfellas





It is not that old really, as it is from 1990 but when I watch this film It like I am watching a Godfather style film. The movie was classy like Godfather and was modern as well. That is what I really liked about this film, and to me why this is why the film is so popular.

If you ever look at films in the 1990's this is easily one of the best and well made and really this make Departed look like nothing.

Robert De Niro gives a very good performance but it Joe Pesci who really made the movie a modern classic. With the whole "whats so funny" scene to his disturbing shows of anger, he really adds more to the main story. Ray Liotta gives a great performance as well but to me the last third of the film got a little boring but the middle section was easily the best. Lorraine Bracco does a great job at her role and we finally get a more female perspective of the mob life, which we never get.

It is a great film with great scenes coming one after another and the film makes you laugh but also makes you turn away in disgust as well.

11. TAXI DRIVER



You know when I was young I thought this film was really that tv show Taxi with Danny Devito.

You know just seeing Jodi Foster as child prostitute was just disturbing in it self and really this just shows that the 70's were easily the best years for great groundbreaking film that really transformed Hollywood.

You have De Niro as a Taxi Driver driving through New York at its worst (the 1970's) and really it is a really important film with many social undertones...

The film starts with having becoming a Taxi Driver and trying to be a normal guy by getting a nice girl. He takes her to a Porno film and she is disgusted. Heartbroken he turns violent and is angered by the "dirty" nature of the city... He is angered by the moral decay of society especially after he see Jodi Foster...

He buys a gun, and becomes a vigilante and really becomes a disturbed man. He tries to rescue Jodi Foster and also tries to murder the Senator of New York. He fails and then rescues Foster which leads to a very graphic climax.

Why this film is good, it just is so important to our society today. It really looks at the idiotic nature of vigilante justice but also at our whole society as well.

What i never got in this film is why did he want to shoot the Senator??

10. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly...



Now this is a real western film...


Directed by Serigo Leone, you get this epic massive film about the West. Some say it was the film that made Western films as a real form of Cinema... rather then entertainment.

The movie imo is really good throughout and it does get a tad boring in the starting, but the last half of the film and the ending scene which is easily one of the most famous scenes ever... To me that last scene was so brilliantly done, with perfect timing, music, the faces, the looks. That last scene to me is easily one of the best scenes ever in film and is the reason why this film is still so well loved.

The three characters are all interesting and you get other characters as well. You have Blondie (the good) played brilliantly by Clint Eastwood. His best performance imo and really plays the role "of the Man with no Name" really well. Tuco played by Eli Wallach (the ugly) in his best performance as well adds a lot of enthusiasm in to the slow parts of the movie and is imo a very interesting character. Angel Eyes (the bad) is really the real villain in this film and he also has a great performance as well. The acting was top notch in this film.

The scenery is impressive and it is real epic film sort of like Lawrence of Arabia. You really get to see the massive and vast American West in all its glory and shame. The ending sequence really uses nice scenery to make that final scene a classic.

The most notable part of the film was the background music. The music at the final scene had my heart pounding outside my chest. It was so dramatic and epic all at the same time. The music really like in Lawrence of Arabia really adds to the film. Perhaps only Lotr is the only recent example of this...

I really love this film, and so do many of my friends who watched with me for the first time. It is easily the best western ever made.

9.The Shawshank Redemption




Perhaps the best example of a box office flop that become one of the most popular film of recent times.

It easily was the best movie from the 90's and it really left a great impact on me emotionally. Perhaps the 2nd time i cried while watching a film.

Anyways we all know the story... The acting was amazing from both characthers, Tim Robbins and
Morgan Freeman. They both gave out their best performances ever in this film and really leads to a great solid friendship between the two and really it was great chemistry between the two.

The film is prehaps well loved for its ending which was easily one of the greatest ever. The most heart warming ending to a film I have ever seen. After the man went through so much trouble and cruelty he finally escaped. He broke the law but you feel sorry for him and really the film makes you never want to go anywhere near a prison ever.

Nonetheless the film does drag in the middle but the film is very interesting throughout and is very well made and directed.

Now I only wish they made more dramatic films like that...

No, I am not the guy who will have stupid Horror movie in my top ten. Instead I give you a undeniable classic and one of the most influential films of all time...


8. Lawrence Of Arabia



This is actually Spielberg's favourite film as well and says influenced him to be a director. Actually all the great directors have said the film has influenced them greatly.

What makes this film great. It is a combination of great actors, great cinematography, great music, great directing, a great story and a beautiful back drop. If you enjoy Epic films, it is impossible that you will not like this film. It is perfect for the people who love those kinds of films.

There are now female actors at all. Actually there isn't a single female part, and really I prefer that in this case, as love story would have ruined this film. Actually its rather bold for this film, almost every epic has a love interest by somebody. The acting is superd and you have some great actors such as Peter O'Toole, Omar Sharif, Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn and Claude Rains.

So you have 5 great actors in amazing roles. Peter O'toole gives an all time performance in this film and really it is because of this film, the man even become well known imo. Omar Sharif also plays his role as sort of his friend and really he plays his role well without any overacting like in Dr. Zhavigo. Alec Guinness plays the role of a Arab King perfectly and clearly he has a small part but like always he does his roles well. Anthony Quinn also has a excellent as a leader of a Tribe and he speaks some great lines in this film as well. Claude Rains has a small but good role as well.

Now the acting was great but the film was known for being EPIC. I have never seen such great scenery in film before and the background music just makes everything seem so huge and epic. You know how sometimes music can convey emotions, this film is a perfect example. The Background music is very good and rather popular.

Now the directing from the director David Lean was good and it is by far, his best film. It blows everything else out of the water. The film is #7 on the AI poll and won 7 academy awards including best picture. The film is actually a film critics and directors enjoy more so then moviegoers but never the less it was a huge box office hit making almost 375 million dollars in todays money. I did get a tad bored in the starting and the ending was a tad bit of a let down, however the film is really great in the middle and really I just love these kinds of films.

7. REAR WINDOW




Jimmy Stewart and Hitchcock return with a great classic and easily one of the suspenseful films ever made. Hitchcock took quite an ordinary setting and made it a place a place of great detail. The setting is full of so many different plot lines and has so many detail to absorb. The setting is just a apartment courtyard but you get to see more then in a film with a dozen different settings.

They are four films that made Hitchcock the greatest director ever, and this is one of them and really must I say why this film is good?

First of all you have Grace Kelly who looks amazing and exotic and is quite a smart and sophisticated women. This is a common trait in his films, the women look hot and different but smart as well and they are blond as well. Then you have Jimmy Stewart as well in a great role in a wheelchair. He plays it perfectly and wonderfully and makes the film a fun ride.

The story is simple, a guy on a wheelchair with lots of spare time, starts to spy on his neighbours until he uncovers a murder mystery. The great thing about this thrillers, is that you can watch it a 2nd time and still find it to be a tense film to watch. This film is really well made and it looks great and it looks old and dated, but 10 mins into the film you will forget about the look of the film.

The reason why this film is so well loved, is the fact is you have such an interaction between the viewer (yourself) and the actors. When the murderer looks at Jimmy Stewart (who is looking at him), you seriously think he is looking at you and you get freaked out. I have never ever felt such a feeling watching any other film ever before.

The high lites are Grace Kelly's amazing looks, Jimmy Stewart, Great Story and the Unique relationship between the viewer and the film in this film.

6. Psycho





Another all time classic and a plot line so ahead of its time, even today it would be a strange film...

In 1960 to kill of the main character half way in a movie and practically killing the entire storyline was a major step forward in cinema. You really were left wondering what will happen next and your did not think Perkins was the real killer. Even today, watching so many wierd films, I found Psycho to be a wierd and strange film, it was just different from everything else. Like these were prehaps some of the greatest plot twists ever.

The film is prehaps Hitchcock's most famous film and is one of the famous films ever created. The shower scene alone is prehaps the most famous scene ever created and everyone that knows film knows that scene. It is also prehaps one of the most disturbing ever, as even though it is not graphic, you literally feel like your being stabbed as well. Really this film makes all of today's horror films look like crap. This is more of a thriller though, but really imo few have came close and really recently nothing has came close at all.

This may be a black and white film but really, imo making this film and Casablanca in colour would not only make them into terribile film but it would be an abomination. The film also has Hitchcock's signature trait. Making films very sexual without there being vulgar or being sexual in the first place. The shower scene is a nude knife fight, but you don't see anything. Perkins is a big pervert but he does not do anything really vulgar to show us. In one scene he was touching a stuffed animal while sitting on a chair while having his hands near his private area. So the film was very sexual and ahead of its time.

The performances are all great from Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh. Their performances are so memorable that they were typecasted forever. Both were all time performances from both people.

They need to make more less graphic horror movies instead make more plot twisting and films that are disturbing but not graphically. However due to this film the whole gore horror movie genre was started as well as this was the first horror film with any gore in it.

The murder of Arbogast was also iconic as well. The film is really iconic really.

This is an all time classic and it is a film everyone must see. It is fun and entertaining , scary, disturbing, perplexing, sexual, exotic and innovative all at the same. A film that changed cinema and a filmed that left my shaking my head in disbelief after viewing it.
Even younger people today like this film as it is a departure from the gruesome disturbing films of today.

OH crap, I forgot about the music, some of the best ever. The film seems like another thriller like Vertigo or something and then BAM! It goes off into a whole new story.
