33. MEMENTO (Christopher Nolan, 2001)

"You know, I've had more rewarding friendships than this one. Although I do get to keep telling the same jokes."

A twisted noir that bases its greatness entirely on its structure. But, even knowing that, I can't help but love this film. Each time I watch it, I have to work to figure it out, and I have trouble comprehending what exactly goes on at the end. But that's the brilliance of it. Another one that requires multiple viewings.

Mmmmm... more Nolan.

I'd have it higher on my list, but anytime it shows on anyone's list is AOK by me.

31. SIGNS (M. Night Shyamalan, 2002)

"Everybody in this family needs to just calm down and eat some fruit or something."

Another expertly crafted horror film. It's absolutely terrifying, and yet the meaningful script is the real highlight. The way that everything ties up together at the end is just terrific. Shyamalan's direction is outstanding and the cast is great, and the Bernard Herrmann-inspired score gives me chills whenever I hear it. Not overly preachy, either.

Hmm there's a surprise

I actually like Signs a lot, and it gets better with time I find. It's much better than that shite War of the Worlds.

I'll go after all the people that just said they want to go. I think I'll be ready by then considering the pace of these lists. If not, I'll push myself back.

35. STAR WARS (George Lucas, 1977)

"That's no moon. It's a space station."

A classic. Archetypal story, famous characters, iconic scenes, and quotable lines. The greatest villain in film history introduced. The greatest pop saga created. What can be said that hasn't been said before?

upon recent viewing...of the 6 films, this ranks 4th...bad acting and at some times, really off chracter marks...but a lot fun. 6/10 i cant believe i put it in my top 10....return of the jedi is 1 million times better...that takes its spot.

everything else...fab.

Absolutely not. I'll be lucky to make 30 days! I plan to do a max of two a day. Most of the time, just one a day. And sometimes, I'll skip a day. It keeps the suspense.

(realistically, though, about 4-5 days)

Aside from your Burton love (which I don't share) this is probably the list I agree with most.

30. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (Peter Jackson, 2003)

"The board is set... the pieces are moving."

The highest Best Picture winner on my list. The conclusion to the greatest trilogy ever made. A completely overpowering and exhilarating experience. It does go on for a bit too long, but it's earned the right. A terrific accomplishment.

29. BATMAN BEGINS (Christopher Nolan, 2005)

"Justice is balance. You burned down my house and left me for dead. Consider us even."

The best comic book film. A great story provides the framework for interesting characters and fantastic action. It's got a fair dose of comedy and the direction is solid. It takes itself seriously, but never forgets to have fun. This is the reason why the sequel is my most anticipated of next year.

28. BACK TO THE FUTURE (Robert Zemeckis, 1985)

"If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits eighty-eight miles per hour... you're gonna see some serious shit."

Could be my most-watched film. An absolute blast from start to finish. Balances fish-out-of-water comedy with sci-fi craziness. The climax - from the playing of Johnny B. Goode to the famous clock tower scene - is absolutely fantastic. A bit soiled by the sequels, but the original is still a classic.

27. APOCALYPSE NOW (Francis Ford Coppola, 1979)

"The horror... the horror..."

A twisted and dark descent into madness. The best war film, but also the strangest. The number of visual metaphors and interpretations present in this movie is staggering. Brando is his usual moody self, but Martin Sheen really drives the film with his layered and underrated performance. A true experience to get through.

26. THE EXORCIST (William Friedkin, 1973)

"I think it might be helpful if I gave you some background on the different personalities Regan has manifested. So far, I'd say there seem to be three. She's convinced-"
"There is only one."

The scariest film I've ever seen. I still get nightmares after watching it. It's extremely disturbing and very powerful, but it's also a expertly crafted character drama. It draws its scares because of the character development, not in spite of it. Simply a type of horror that isn't seen anymore.

25. THE TERMINATOR (James Cameron, 1984)

"Come with me if you want to live."

As much of a horror film as an action film, and yet superb at both. The cheap look doesn't detract from its impact, even today. A brilliantly original idea melded with terrific execution. Schwarzenegger does what he does best and Biehn has never been better. The endlessly grinning Terminator at the end of the film is still terrifying.

24. ALIEN (Ridley Scott, 1979)

"It's a robot. Ash is a god damn robot."

Another terrifying horror flick. One of the most ingenious creatures ever created for film combined with a basic slasher plot with great characters. The way that we're just dropped into this ship, without any preamble, just before they pick up the alien, is very refreshing. The look of the film, despite being almost thirty years old, is also very impressive, as it doesn't look dated at all - probably due to Scott's use of an 'used future'. All in all, a scary horror film and an innovative sci-fi flick all in one.

Yep, of course. Haven't you seen it? For shame, Squee, for shame. :nono:

I have. A long long time ago.

In a galaxy far far away.

I like the 2nd one so much better I don't even bother with the first.

23. HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN (Alfonso Cuarón, 2004)

"Only one will die tonight."

The best Potter film, and not because it's adapted from the best Potter book. Cuarón's direction is a fresh and exciting change in the franchise, and the style is most welcome. The story is an efficient adaptation of the book, and the movie actually feels like it can live on its own. Oldman is a great Sirius Black, and the rest of the cast is just as impressive. The best third installment of any franchise.

22. ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND (Michel Gondry, 2004)

"Maybe you can find yourself a nice antique rocking chair to die in."

One of the most whimsical and imaginative films in the last few years. It's got the narrative complexity of a Nolan film, the visual flair of a Burton film, and the heart of a Spielberg film. As a result, it's an utterly delightful experience to watch. It's truly got something for everyone.

21. BRAZIL (Terry Gilliam, 1985)

"This is your receipt for your husband... and this is my receipt for your receipt."

A wild comic adventure. At once both a mockery of Orwell and a warning of the future much like his. The dry British humour is loads of fun and the colourful images are a real treat. Of course, one must see the original director's version, and not the butchered American version.
