Number 10: 12 Monkey's

Gilliam's best and one of the most convincing end of days visions put to screen, 12 Monkey's is a lurid Desent into madness with even a drooling lunatic Pitt hitting all the right notes. The soundtrack deserves major praise as well, it fits perfectly its screeching tones heighening the sense of urgency. Oddly being a dolt I found the ending to be a massive downer for years because I never noticed the women on the plane was one of the scientists. I felt rather stupid when I realise that.

Hmm, no Brazil on the list then? Thought you were crazy over that one.

I love 12 Monkeys by the way.

Glad someone else has Twelve Monkeys in his top ten.

No Brazil, though? For shame, Gulli. :nono:

Number 8: High Fidelity

Definetly in terms of pure fun and enjoyment alone this is one of my all time fav's. It's a Romantic comedy for guy's a very rare breed indeed and it avoids all the usual genre pitfalls through the weight of excellent characters, sharp wit and the laconic freewheeling style of its narrative. I absolutely adore John Cusack in this, adore the geeky conversations about Music and Film, adore the petulent interplay between Jack Black and Todd Louiso........I could go on and on. Probably in my top 5 most watched films.

Number 7: Jaws

Image

My all time favourite Speilburg film, its a lean uncomplicated affair. No political subtexts, no overladen polt points and no stupid endings, instead we get comedy suspense and fear all wrapped into one perfect little bundle. Its the interplay between the 3 main players that make this film so great. It feels totally natural, and to be honest the Shark is just a secondary diverson. Steven never will match this again in my mind, but thats a fine complaint to have.

Number 6: Bloody Sunday

Image

This Greengrass helmed account of the 1972 Bloody Sunday massacre is a dirty intimate affair. You can feel the tension rising with each minute, your in there with the characters forced to experience what they are going through. I always think anybody with high praise for United 93 should watch this and see how it really should have been done. And with the shit finally hits the fan its like a punch to the gut. A travesty this didn't get some recognition at Oscar time.

I think trix nailed it, Im interested in whether Aliens has topped City of God all of a sudden or something, judging from Squees comment earlier.

Number 5: Vanishing Point

Considering my drooling love for this film a top 10 place was a guarantee. So many ways to enjoy it, the stunning cinematography, the hulking beast of a Dodge Challenger, the lonely existenial journey Kowalski takes thru the plains, the assortment of quirky side characters, and of course the explosive ending. Soundtrack kicks major ass as well.

Number 4: Predator

Image

Wins the title as my most watched film, maybe every 5 or 6 weeks ill throw it on and sit back and let the testosterone lunacy wash over me. A definate 80s film. Big Guns, Big Men, and lots and lots of explosions :shades: . However to just call it a dumb action movie would be to do it injustice, its a tense affair with an excellent main theme and truly memorable main opponent. The sequels and off shoots are a pale joke, this is heaven.

Number 3: Aliens

Image

After the low key Alien you could have forgiven James Cameron for following the same route, but like all great directors he choose his own path creating what can best be described as Alien shot full of Speed. Weavers Ripley is one of cinemas truly great characters. So much so that any gender considerations become irrelevent and not even noticable due to the force of the performance. And with men like Biehn and Paxton in support this Film cuts a swate through lesser actioners like they were paper.

Number 2: City Of God

Image

No longer number 1 but to be honest its a wafer seperating any of the films in the top 5, depends on mood. City of God's authenticity is what makes it such of riveting piece of cinema, Meirelles has captured lightening in a jar with this. It like a lo-fi Godfather type film in a way with young Rio dwellers in place of Italian heavies. For this films defining character one has to go to Lil Ze, a completely demented yet multi layered creation, and of course the narrators journey ain't half bad either.

Number 1: The Thing

Image

What an utterly perfect film this is. Its the raw tension that does it for me. The script isn't heavy, the characters aren't given long back stories and motivations, its just a simple tale of mistrust and survival at sub zero temperatures, and yes lots of freaky alien hybrids as well. Its the unknown aspect that drives this film forward, you never get answers The Thing hops around leaving you devoid of answers, its as if the film is laughing at you rolling about in your anxiety. I absolutely adore this film and know I'll never tire of it. Simply my favourite.

And thats it guys. remember these top 100 lists are a general indication of taste but hope you enjoyed reading this, (and sorry to Makeshift for not dragging it out :) )
