Better than ETSOTSM, hmm. That's in a virtual tie with The Motorcycle Diaries for my fav. of the year.

Yup, I saw it at the theatre in Georgetown. Gotta love that theatre, especially considering Sideways was only playing there and somewhere in Maryland (Bethesda, I think).

Sounds like the mature version of Road Trip...

But it's not, really. The road trip is not really what the movie's about.

Maybe ??? more like an adult movie like Diane Lane in the Tuscany movie. ( Note. Side fact. Both star Sandra Oh.)

As Sideways begins to go into wider release today, it's rating at Rotten Tomatoes has started to plummet from it's former 100% level. There is a particularily scathing review from the respected salon.com website.

Is this the beginning of the end for Sideways?

Saw Sideways a few weeks back...and it knocks my socks off. It's totally great. It's one of those films that stays with you. And reinforces why Alexander Payne is my hero.

Better than Spider-Man 2? Blasphemy!

Haven't seen it yet. I'm so ill with the flu and a 103 fever that I'm just hoping that I get better in time for Eastwood's new movie, which I'm sure will be better too, and the academy may even reward with a best picture, after that sham of an awards show they had last year. Mystic River deserved it, and we all know it. :D

Uh-oh...you did not just say that. The flood gates are going to open very soon.

I think everybody knows deep down that it was a sham. Even New Line, who didn't even acknowledge it's awards on the DVD cover of the theatrical, knows that Mystic River buried it as a film. That alone should put me in the clear.

And they wouldn't hijack Libs' Sideways thread, would they? :P

Dave Poland is giving Eastwood's new film all kinds of love. Apparently something happens about an hour and a half in which is the point that "Million Dollar Baby goes from being a good movie to being the likely Oscar winner."

I have to agree with Ahmed on Mystic River though. Average film with some good performances (I think Sean Penn stunk up the screen). It was like an episode of Law and Order: SVU stretched out to 2 hours...

I have to catch this film soon. Libs should be very happy to see what a Saturday-to-Sunday Sideways had:

Best Picture - New York, New York Online, L.A., San Francisco, and Boston Film Critics Awards
Nominated for 7 Golden Globe awards, leading all films.
Among the AFI's Top 10 films of the year

The last time I saw this kind of dominance among critic groups was American Beauty or Schindler's List.

Well, Mystic River wasn't a popcorn movie like ROTK, where you could just check your brain at the door, I'll give you that one. There were many layers to the story and characters, which probably explains why some people had trouble keeping up with it. It didn't have explosions and such to wake them up when their minds drifted. Still, as far as story and performance go, it was clearly a better made film than the sloppy theatrical version of ROTK that we got, and I anxiously look forward to the extended edition in a few days, because the sloppy and poorly edited drudge that was released didn't fool me like it did so many sheep who had decided how they felt about it long before they even saw it. I like to watch things before I grade them.

I've been hearing tons of good things about Million Dollar Baby as well, so it's very possible that some redemption for Eastwood is on the way. The academy knows he got a raw deal last time, and in a fair world, Mystic River would have won, because Fellowship of the Ring would have won over A Beautiful Mind, and they wouldn't have made up for a past mistake at Eastwood's expense by awarding that slop fest, that New Line won't even acknowledge as a best picture or best director, or hell, a record setting award winner, on the cover of the theatrical DVD.

As far as Sideways goes, congratulations to it for it's domination at the globes, and congratulations to Libs for making a good call on this movie before it became fashionable to do so.

Naw...you don't get bent out of shape when somebody calls ROTK for what it is. Not you. It's just a coincidence that we keep running into eachother about the subject.

Now the discussion is ended. :P

Yes the discussion ends now that we've established it was more than a popcorn movie.

Something about the name 'sideways' really disturbs me.

I've just seen Sideways, the new film from Alexander Payne. It is now (in my eyes) the best film of the year, surpassing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The film is just so well-written and insightful. You feel like magic is happening right before your eyes during this film. Paul Giamatti gives the performance of a career, as the insecure, wine-knowledgable Miles. It's a tour-de-force performance that should be honored the Academy. Thomas Haden Church's performance will surprise those that only remember him as Lowell from "Wings." Although Sandra Oh is underused (but still good), Virginia Madsen is wonderful. The actress, who has never really broken out, has one passionate monologue about how/why she got into being interested in winery. It's one of those rare scenes in film that is so well-performed and realized, that you forget you're watching an actor.

Overall, this ranks right up there with Payne's previous two films, the glorious Election and About Schmidt.

To whom it may concern:

Why isn't there a thread for reviews in the Review forum for this? This is about all anybody has to go by, and I am a lot more willing to trust the words and opinions of people I know, than I am to trust film critics orpeople from other sites that I don't know. She seems to be really up for this movie, so at least give her or somebody else a thread in the review forum to sell everybody on it with a full review. This movie just cleaned up at the Golden Globes, and the review forum is completely ignoring it.

Why?

Much appreciated , bABA, which leads me to a question that has been weighing heavily on my mind. If Michael Douglas was a barber, would Catherine Zeta-Jones have looked twice?
