Re: Rank The Marvel Studios Movies
I have to admit to something wildly crazy: I had only seen Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk up to a few weeks ago. Life events and films in the universe piling up led me to be so far behind, I just didn't bother seeing them. But I'm rectifying that now, little by little.
So far...
1. Thor 2. Iron Man 3. Captain America: The First Avenger 4. The Incredible Hulk 5. Iron Man 2
IM2 was a typical summer sequel. I liked Hulk more than I remember but I've forgotten a lot of it already. Captain America was good but I didn't love it. Iron Man was good but a tad overrated IMO. I remember liking it a lot more in 2008 but now I just think it works because RDJ is so good and not what anyone expected at the time for a superhero. The story didn't wow me as much. And I honestly liked Thor the most. Probably a sacrilegious opinion but it was light and fun. Probably because it's generally on the mid-to-lower scale of most rankings that my expectations were basement-level.

I personally loved it at the time and still do (though perhaps like CA more now). Nice to see you rank it highly.

Re: Rank The Marvel Studios Movies
1. Thor 2. Iron Man 3 3. Iron Man 4. The Avengers 5. Captain America: The First Avenger 6. The Incredible Hulk 7. Iron Man 2
Watched The Avengers and Iron Man 3, currently warching Thor: The Dark World. I'm kind of shocked how forgettable Avengers was. It's been a week and I mainly remember lots of shit getting destroyed and the Avengers standing together on screen. To me that's all that movie was. Get all the characters together and throw a story together with it. I really like the individual stories more than the big coming-together event.
Iron Man 3 is my favorite of the three Iron Man movies. It was way more focused and interesting than IM2. IM2 was just a summer blockbuster sequel. I blame that more on that they didn't know if this whole MCU thing would take off or not, so not much thought was put into it. It was more "Iron Man was huge, put out a sequel as fast as possible". But IM3 felt more cohesive. Not perfect by any means but I liked it.
Iron Man 2 remains the only one I genuinely didn't like. The rest are at least watchable. I only felt very positively towards Thor, Iron Man 3 and Iron Man so far (I was a tad unfair to IM in my last post).

Outside of the novelty factor - the first Avengers film isn’t all that great.
IM2 suffers because it feels like a rushed sequel and yet is also stuffed with wider MCU filler. The best thing about it is the introduction of Black Widow,

Iron Man 2 is indeed a turd. I always wanted to watch them in order, so I kept avoiding them and they kept going despite me. It's been nice watching something the whole world has pretty much seen already. Finished Thor: The Dark World last week. The first quarter of it, I expected it to be as good as Thor. But I don't know. I agree with the general consensus on that one. It's not awful, not as bad as IM2 (that will likely be my benchmark for bad Marvel movies going forward), but I expected to enjoy it a lot more after loving Thor.

It's pretty much what I expected though. They hit all the marks they had been building towards. Could they have made it a lot stronger and more memorable? Absolutely. But it's what it was supposed to be for the general audience: accessible to everyone while still being generally pleasing to the fanbase.

It's very easy to say that now. But so many films have failed at juggling of characters, it really is a marvel from a filmmaking perspective. Each film since then raised the stakes immensely. Everyone talks about the next new car, and forget the revolutionary Model T.

Re: Rank The Marvel Studios Movies
Captain America: The Winter Soldier Thor Iron Man 3 Iron Man The Avengers Captain America: The First Avenger Thor: The Dark World The Incredible Hulk Iron Man 2
Holy shit, Cap: Winter Soldier was fantastic. It's like a movie completely separate from the MCU for most of the run. I didn't expect the style to be so much better than most of the first bunch. Iron Man 3 kind of started it but Winter Soldier knocks it out of the park in doing something more with the characters.
That said, it does fall into the usual Marvel trappings for most of the big climax (destruction porn!). But I'll forgive that. This was the first one where I was genuinely buying what they were selling. And with the character I was least excited for, especially after the OK first one. I may actually appreciate that one more now in retrospect.

Re: Rank The Marvel Studios Movies
Guardians of the Galaxy Captain America: Civil War Doctor Strange Captain America: The Winter Soldier Thor Ant-Man Iron Man 3 Iron Man
Avengers: Age of Ultron The Avengers Captain America: The First Avenger
Thor: The Dark World The Incredible Hulk Iron Man 2
Big update! Just went over the halfway mark in the MCU (not counting the Disney+ shows). Guardians of the Galaxy was every bit as fun as I was hoping for. It helped push the MCU into something more fantasy-based, which I liked. I know it's all fantasy, but I liked a lot of it. Colorful, funny, a blast. I'd expect no less from James Gunn.
Age of Ultron was a tad better than the first Avengers for me, but they still haven't found the right balance for having all these characters together for me. Much more of a fan of the individual stories.
I loved a lot of Ant-Man. The action, especially in the climax, was crazy enjoyable. Loved the shrunken down stuff. That said, the origin story was just OK. And oddly, I like the MCU and I love Paul Rudd, but I'm not sure the two go together. Although I liked his role a lot more in Civil War. Maybe he should only be a part of someone else's story. But even the character isn't that interesting to me. But they bought a whole lot of goodwill with the action.
Civil War was the best Avengers movie that wasn't an Avengers movie. Makes me excited for what the Russos do with Infinity War and Endgame. Everything I loved about The Winter Soldier plus it handled the characters just right, even if we were missing Thor and Banner. And finally they addressed how much destruction they cause with their big battles and the toll it takes on everyone else they leave behind. Wasn't a fan of the idea of pitting the Avengers against each other, but it worked just fine.
Unexpectedly loved Doctor Strange. When it started, I was bored through the first ten or so minutes, especially after the car crash. But the origin story, the visuals, the unexpected comedy during the serious scenes. Worked on me. Like Ant-Man, Strange himself isn't the most compelling character in his own movie, and Cumberbatch is oddly distracting playing the role. But loved everything else. Probably my biggest surprise so far since Thor, as far as enjoying it and expecting to not.
I split up the rankings into three parts. Top tier I really liked. Everything above Thor I'd say were excellent. Thor down to Iron Man are really good but got their flaws too. Next tier is good but left me overall let down. Bottom tier range from OK (Thor 2), decent but boring (Hulk) and just bad (Iron Man 2).

Re: Rank The Marvel Studios Movies
Depending on my mood, I could honestly say the top three are interchangeable for me. Guardians is top now, but could easily be Civil War or even Doctor Strange.

Re: Rank The Marvel Studios Movies
4.5 Avengers: Infinity War
4 Guardians of the Galaxy Thor: Ragnarok Captain America: Civil War Doctor Strange Spider-Man: Homecoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Captain America: The Winter Soldier Thor
3.5 Ant-Man Iron Man 3 Black Panther Iron Man
3.0 Avengers: Age of Ultron The Avengers Captain America: The First Avenger
2.5 Thor: The Dark World The Incredible Hulk
2.0 Iron Man 2
Got five more in. GOTG2 was bigger, funnier, sillier than the first. But something felt slightly off compared to the first. I wasn't as engaged with the story. But it was still excellent. And Batista was the MVP as Drax. Some of the funniest moments of the MCU came from him in this.
I really, really liked Homecoming. I like the MCU entries that are kind of in their own camp or genre, and this was a fun high school movie that happens to be in the MCU. And I love Michael Keaton being Michael Keaton, even if the villain was pretty easily disposed of.
Thor: Ragnarok was as good as I was hoping. Took everything I loved about the first Thor and added the GOTG-style humor into it. If anything, I may say it borders on being too silly at times, but I'll take that over anything too serious.
Which might bring me to what I felt was slightly underwhelming: Black Panther. I really thought I'd love this, but it felt like one of the earlier MCU movies. It wasn't bad at all, and I guess I don't want EVERY MCU movie to copy the GOTG style or to be constantly lighthearted. I want to rewatch it at some point, now knowing what it's going to be. The action was excellent though and I loved exploring this world.
Infinity War is just excellent, start to finish. If I had to criticize, the storyline is pretty much easily summed up in one sentence. But the fact that they take a simple story and it's a riveting, action-packed two and a half hours says a lot for the movie. This is what I wanted from the first two Avengers movies. I'll forgive the first because I know I was harder on it than I should have been, but Age of Ultron (which I did rate slightly higher) should have been closer to this than what it was. Kudos to the Russos and all involved for masterfully balancing all these characters and ideas in one movie.
