Re: All-Time Top 100 Movie List Thread (Update Time!!)
I'm not sure I agree with the recency bias. It may have played a small part, but I actively try to cancel it out whenever I write reviews, make lists, etc. There are a lot of factors that go into a Top 100 list and choices for the KJ awards. I may have ranked it higher at the KJ awards for many reasons, mainly which had the best/worst chance to win, so I wanted to support one more than the other. And with regards to the Top 100 list, it's fucking hard ranking movies from different eras and genres, but here I felt that while Three Billboards is much more watchable, Dunkirk is the bigger achievement in cinema, and the experience I had watching it at the cinema was unreal. And still, position 95 to position 80 in a Top 100 list is not even that big, considering I've seen thousands of films.
Ocean's Eleven was on my "others" list, but didn't get in this time. But it's no where near as good as its sequel. If it got in at any time before it was around the 90th mark.
Yeah, I went to see La La Land many times, and just fell in love. It is not often that a film has that perfect mix of beautiful visuals, quotable dialogue, and a soundtrack that you play over and over again.

Yeah, well, it's not very often that masterpieces are made, so most of the changes on my list are not inclusions, but rankings. I did move a few out, most notably Last Man Standing, Liar Liar, Jerry Maguire, and Six Days, Seven Nights.

The next film on your list I'll probably watch and haven't seen yet is The Crow.
I also haven't seen Conan for just too long that it's hard to know how I really feel about it, just remembering not liking it that much as a kid.
The 'Burbs is another film I haven't seen, but just doesn't look appealing.
After that we'll get into a bunch of Chan films that I wasn't into when I was younger, but I'll try to get to those in your top 100 at some point.

I was mostly poking fun at all awards voters with the recency bias thing. Plus, I think Dunkirk surprised everyone with how good it is on replays, even out of the theater. Rambo 3 is on itunes for a $2 rental. Maybe I will check it out tomorrow. Also, with O12, I've never got that film at all. What was the point of anything if they had the egg the entire time?

To play Toulour at his own game and show him up even more than just beating him to the egg. It's a thieves game. Not just to beat the competing thief, but to really run it home that he was beaten (even before he began) and embarrass him like he did to them earlier in the film. Plus, it can't hurt to give the team time to move the egg around while nobody knows it's missing.

I need help making a list.
There are certain films that I have seen dozens of times. How on earth do I compare those to movies I have seen once or maybe twice? It just doesn't seem fair, and it's difficult to not be biased to movies I've seen and loved over and over again. I see a lot of movies that I like but forget a lot of them because I haven't seen them in a few years, and then of course I've only seen the huge blockbusters from before I was born, and not even all of them.
How do I separate what I actually like from what I like because it is familiar or in a genre I enjoy (animated, musical, fantasy, etc.)?

I never go personal. I go for the film's merits if that helps. Though I'm sure a couple snuck in based on personal opinion. I'll always look more from the technical standpoint more. Are you really going to waste 23 spots on all Narnia, SW, and Potter films?
I've also cheated putting an entire franchise in one spot. Or you comment on other entries you love in the series that didn't quite make your cut.

Always go personal. It's YOUR top 100. Nobody else's. If you go Thegun's route, you will end up with the IMDB Top 100.
Nobody else cares what movies are on your list anyway, so you might as well make it movies you absolutely love. So at least one person will be satisfied with the list...that person being you.

Re: All-Time Top 100 Movie List Thread (Update Time!!)
I think it is fair actually. Up until my 20s I would watch the same movies over and over without any diminishing returns. But now I’d always rather watch something new. It correlates with how much you value your free time, and as a young man it is just so plentiful.
Just be unique to what you are now. You don’t have to have all 8 Potter films in your top 100 just because they were important to you, but it’s perfectly fine to do so.

There's a reason you've seen those films dozens of times, because they're your favorite films. Being in the genre you like such as Disney films is part of them being your favorite, it's not different than Algren having 80s action movies at the top of his list

Re: All-Time Top 100 Movie List Thread (Update Time!!)
My real question is how do you even compare a movie you’ve seen once to something like Harry Potter I’ve seen so many times.
And the main reason I like the Harry Potter films so much is the books, not the movies on their own merits. And a lot of musicals I like just for the songs. Is that really fair to put something like The Greatest Showman super high when I wouldn’t like it very much at all without the songs?

Re: All-Time Top 100 Movie List Thread (Update Time!!)
lol. Your top 8 movies ever made are movies you only like because of their source material??? If you dislike the films, re-do your list. And it's easy to compare movies you've seen many times with movies you've seen just once. List them in the order you prefer them. Really it's as simple as that. And there is a reason you've seen them so many times...they're great movies. Don't overthink it. Or have a rule for newer movies that they can only be included after a re-watch if you're unsure (unless they're surefire masterpieces).
And your song question is ridiculous. Again you're overthinking it. Are the songs in the movie? If so, then yes it's fucking fair.

Respect for ranking the Columbus Harry Potter movies first, those are the best ones. He went edgy with the Gone Girl pick

First update in almost five years. Ten new entries. No real changes near the top, not really sure if I'll ever change the top 10. And I still included my favorite trilogies/franchises as single entries. I honestly enjoy all the films in them pretty equally, and don't want to have thirteen spots taken up by them.

I've got about 26 new entries on mine. Trying to figure out a new order as a whole.
