| Post subject: | Joan Allen's Yes And Iambic Pentameter |
I caught two different reviews of Yes this weekend. On AMC's Movie Club, the five critics virtually panned the film, called it pretentious and couldn't get over the use of rhymed iambic pentameter. On Ebert and Roeper, Ebert called it one of the year's best films while Roeper mirrored the comments of AMC's critics. I've seen several clips now and I'm not sure I could last more than 10 minutes with the rhymed iambic pentameter. Too much for my feeble cinema taste. :razz: I really enjoyed director Sally Potter's past work. The Tango Lesson was one of the best films of 1997. Extremely well excuted, hyper-romantic. It's a real gem. I'll have to pass on Yes though. Too arty farty. |

I have never been a fan of the lead actress, even though I can't place her name right now, she is the reason I am sitting this one out. |

I like Joan Allen's work, she's pretty popular lately. I could just do without the iambic pentameter. Too much style over substance. |

It could work well enough if used interestingly. If Potter dwells too much on the way she's emphasized the form, it'll just be boring. If the form lends itself to the content, it could be great. Think what Nolan's Memento would have sounded like before viewing the movie. A pretentious new narrative weave? Most likely, but when one watched the movie, it fit perfectly. We'll see if this is a similar case.... |

While I have not alas yet seen this flick Iambic pent does have appeal to me Pretentious? Yes. An arty style to pick But I'll be sure to rent on DVD. And yeah I know, I'll never live the above down, but it was fun. |

Moving that into the present is even worse. |
