What do you guys think of The Believer?
I wasn't going to start a thread about this, because I assumed no one had seen it. But a couple people mentioned it in passing so I thought I'd bring it up. I actually found this movie to be brilliant.
I was so worried when I first heard Jewish Neo-Nazi. I thought it would be some lame rehashing of a kid who was picked on in school, freaked out, and rebelled in the worst way. It wasn't like that at all. Henry Bean took all the time in the world to explore Danny.
I don't know if anyone has ever read anything compiled by Arvind Sharma, but there's a book called Our Religions which has essays on seven of the larger practices. There is a section on Judaism which is pretty uncanny in discussing the dual nature of Judaism. As not only a religion but perhaps an ethnicity. I agree with it to a point, and I think its important when approaching The Beleiver and Danny's character.
Basically, he has strong reverence for the religious aspects of Judaism. He gets incredibly upset when others try to directly touch the Torah. He knows and respects all the practives and theology. It seems to me he hates the diasporac "ethnic" element. The cultural habits, the personality seperated from Genesis.
Anyways, I'm just throwing some ideas about it out. Its not an expository movie, so I would love to hear how people felt about Danny, and also Bean's treatment of the subject.
