Calling for all horror fans here. :)

Modern German cinema isn't exactly popular for horror movies. Unless of course, you consider the comedy-crap produced here like Harte Jungs and Erkan & Stefan horror  However, this one movie is quite impressive for German standards.

It's not a secret that I am partial to horror flicks, but at the same time, I genreally dislike German movies. This one turned out to be an exception. It stars Franka Potente who you all probably know from Run Lola Run and the Bourne movies with Matt Damon

Here's a brief plot description:

A young medical student named Paula (Franka Potente) gets a place in an exclusive medical school. Soon after her arrival, however, strange things happen and dead bodies of other students start showing up. Eventually she discovers a conspiracy by a secret society operating within the school.

Back in 1996 Scream set off a huge wave of slasher flicks. Some of them were decent, some weren't, but none came anywhere close the first Scream. This wave resonated in Germany and eventually, in 2000 the German answer to Scream, Anatomie came out. I have to say that out of all movies trying to mimic Scream's formula for success, Anatomie was one of the most successful. Certainly, it was a slasher movie, but it definitely brought an own touch to the genre. I actually consider it superior to the both Scream sequels. It is well-made, suspenseful, with a good blood 'n gore factor and mostly well-acted, especially by Potente. If I had to rate it, I'd give it a good B+.

I was wondering if anyone of you have checked it out. I know Tony Montana has, but I thought maybe someone else too... If not, then see it whenever you're in the mood for some good slasher flick ;)

Anatomy? I've seen this at Blockbuster for, like, 3 years. Never picked it up.

This was a fun movie. Kind of a minor Scream follower but with the help of the creepy medical school setting. I remember a few good set pieces - on ein particular with the bad guy hiding was great, if I recall well.

In the end, It was as silly as most whodunits - a genre you have to do very well to not fall into crapiness - but quite entertaining. I have never seen the sequel, though, and I´m not sure if I should...

It was more style and suspense than anything. The story certainly didn't set the world on fire, heh.

I think the second is a good movie, only slightly worse than the first. It is also very different. Much more adult. It's not a teenie slasher and you pretty much know from the beginning on who's behind the whole stuff. It's a thriller with less kills as well as blood 'n gore. It is good, just lacks the suspense and the good cast of the first.

I'm getting the general sense that most horror falls into that category, which is too bad, because an undercurrent of interesting commentary could really do miracles for the genre.

The original Dawn of the Dead suceeded in that department for the most part. You'll see ;)

That´s surprising. I thought It´d be a copy of the first, kind of like "I still know who yuo operated last summer" or something. The movie got released at a time when I was in Germany and thta is how I knew of its existence... don´t think It got a release here, not even on DVD. Guess I´ll have to find out.

I actually think horror movies are a great vehicle for differents kinds of commentary... and a very effective one. Right now, I´d say "May", "Cube" - that´s more sci-fi, but you get the point - any of Romero´s zombie movies, "The others"... are giving you more to chew on that just a fright. I´m sure I am forgetting many others.

In any case, they´re always fun. The awful, ridiculous ones, too. Cause if they are good, they are really good; but if they´re bad, they are even better

I thought this movie was great! I gave it an 8/10 (A-) and own it. I also enjoyed the sequel, unlike most, and gave it a 7/10 ( B ). I own the sequel as well.
