There are quite a few British movies that I liked, I'm going to have to think a while for what the number one was.

Here's a resource with films by country to aid in this composing your lists. It's hardly comprehensive, but it's a start to get you in the mood...

New Zealand: Whale Rider
Australia: The Piano
Netherlands: The Fourth Man
France: Girl on the Bridge (but, yow! - it's almost impossible to pick one here...)
Great Britain: Whisky Galore (ditto...)
Italy: Life is Beautiful (ditto...)
China: CTHD
Japan: My Neighbor Totoro
Canada: Jesus of Montreal
Thailand: Ong Bak (way under-rated!)
Denmark: Dogville
Belgium: Toto, The Hero
Sweden: My Life as a Dog
Spain: Belle Epoque

That's it for now - it's a pretty humbling task...

Good pick for Germany. I might have to change mine, I forgot about it. One of the best.
Russian Ark had to be one of the biggest let-downs for me in recent years. I was so excited for it, and except for a few vignettes, I found it very trying on my patience, and not all that well crafted. I'm having trouble procurring a best Russian film actually, but I'm half way through War and Peace right now, so maybe soon. I also have yet to see an Ingmar Bergman movie...I know...shame of my life.

@Matatonio: What did you think of Devil's Backbone? I am unsure, because it started off so well and then ended up just being about some disgruntled guy. I was sure the missile and the ghost boy had a little bit more to do with it. That was really one of the most recent movies to have massive potential that fell through for me.
