Good article, but I am missing the German Downfall... Undead and Oldboy are both good movies, I saw them. |

YAY! I hope it has a good run in the States, even though the release date is somewhat stupid. Should start off with a huge PTA, though. |

Well, interesting article and great pic of Maggie Chuen there. I can't tell what the reviewer was aiming towards. I noticed me mentioned several of the movies the Lacter has seen and said were good, but was the article aiming to identify quality of box-office success? I thought with the discussion's around 2046 that he meant the box office reception. In that case, I have to agree that this year was painfully week for all foreign and most indie flicks. In past years Amelie, Dirty Pretty City of God, and Even Belleville were hitting upwards of 7-010 million. Spring, Summer, eaked out 3 million this year despite excellent reviews and strong WOM. This year we saw Hero and Daggers pull in large money, and Diaries took in 16 million thus far. I think the only countries with Box Office pull right noe are China and Mexico and I've stated as such previously. Even if those German movies are great, they will botch the ditribution timing and promotion here, and just the content and style of German flicks will gaurantee that even if its 100% at RT, it won't make more than 3 million. I've seen nothing from the French, German, Japanese, Russia, or anywhere else lately. Very Long Engagement might get up there, but only with an Oscar nod. Really just two major importers right now. Hopefully some interest can be generated for some of the movies the article listed, because a few of them sound quite good. |

In recent years, some German movies enjoys success in US. Such as "Good Bye, Lenin!" ($4 million) , "Nowhere in Africa"($6.1 million) and "Run Lola Run"($7.2 million). For French movies, "Amelie" ($33 million) and "Brotherhood of the Wolf"($10.9 million) also became two highest-grossing French language films in the United States in the last two decades. |

I agree that Mexico and China are the surest bets when it comes to the success of foreign movies. France is on its way there too, I believe A Very Long Engagement can break $10 million. China is by far the surest bet. It is just that their movies work for so many audiences. Normal blockbuster folks go see it for the fights and the action and the art-house fans for the quality. Hopefully, Downfall can pull in some money, it has had a really good run in Netherlands and it has just opened in France with the biggest opening for a German film there, I think. |

You know what else is kind of sad? since Life is Beautiful, the Italians have clear fallen off the face of the earth. ![]() I'm Not Scared got maybe 3 million, but really, there has been nothing. Dove miegli Itliani? I have heard zero from them....ZERO! Also, I thought Brazil would do more After City og God. They have a very rich film tradition. The French were big as far up as Amelie and then poof...nothing. I'm glad for Very Long Engagement to pick things up. Sweden was big for decades with Bergman and others, and now they have a few, but have been eclipsed by the Dogme 95 people, who seem to be the only Northern Europe/Scandanavian directors right now. (Not counting Germany, I mean Dutch, Danes, etc). |
