So who saw it? What did you think??? I thought it was the most engagin movie up until the end. The sad part is, I have forgotten most of it. WHo thinks that the black and white actually had a purpose?? |

I have, and I'm going to get railed on for sayng it wasn't that profound at all. *ducks* Seriously, it wasn't bad in its attempts to go "inside" the head, but it would have been better as a short. And of course the apartment has to be the outward representation of his inner mind, so he lives in a dump with loud hallway bad lights, and he gets a ton of nose bleeds. Meh. The black and white I think was intentional, IMO, because it was already so cramped and chaotic that had you added color, it would have felt more like candyland than claustophobic. I guess there is a long standing tradition of psychological deterioration being externalized (showing on the physical body) hence the nose bleeds and feighnting sessions and the dumpy apartment. But it wasn't anything new. Still, for all my cutting, it wasn't that bad. It was at least trying to struggle with questions of number and obsession, and long before Beautiful Mind, which was even worse. I just won't probably watch it again is all. What did you think bABA? |

I agree with the fact that it was toooo long. My friends who were stoned for months argued with me that the movie was really 4 hours long. I had to convince them otherwise when I finally showed them the running time on various sites. I found the movie engaging but only cause of the centra character .. once ofcourse they added in the jews and everyone else into it, the movie spiralled downwards. Your black and white analysis has merit but i think there was more to do with it. I think it had a connection to the guy's mind as well but i haven't seen this in years so prolly not in the position to comment more. |

This one quote salvages the whole movie: "When I was a little kid my mother told me not to stare into the sun, so once when I was six, I did." The movie sort of speaks to me, as once upon a time, I could get that obsessed about the numbers and solving problems (of course not to the extent of losing my mind over it). However, the tacked on parts about the Kaballah and the stockmarket folks were unnecessary in my view. Oh, and not once does the movie deal with the number Pi. |

Krem wrote: Oh, and not once does the movie deal with the number Pi. ![]() ![]() ![]() Its freakin' true. I was expecting it to be more about someone looking for underlying order (hey that string theory thing from the paper two days ago) or at least someone that was going to spend day after day writing out pi until he got to the last goddamn digit :x @bABA...the black and white could very well have been about his mental space. It wouldn't be anything new. Antonioni did a move called The Red Desert (Il Deserto Rosso) way back in 64 about a woman who was going a bit nuts. The entire movie was actually shot black and white, and in dank sort of factor working town. On occasion there would all of a sudden be these oddly bright color scenes when her mind had a change of state, but would always return to colorless as she reverted to desperation. |
