Forget Open Water, forget Hostel, forget United 93 - if you wanna see a truly frightening horror movie go see Road to Guantanamo, the new docu-drama-mentary from Michael Winterbottom, who has already had a cool indie film released this year -- the frame-bustin' comedy Tristam Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story.

Well, I can assure you, Winterbottom's new film is no comedy. It is a sickeningly horrific account of three British citizens who were mistakenly imprisoned at Camp X-Ray at Guantanamo Bay after being captured while visiting Afghanistan for a wedding. Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time! But who could imagine being detained and tortured for three years by allies of your own country?

It is the worst kind of perversion of freedom and democracy -- ie: that done in the name of freedom and democracy. Those who have sanctioned and commited these acts against fellow humans are either sick and twisted, or have been made so by brainwashing propoganda of the highest order.

Luckily, there seems to be a glimmer of sanity in the news this week (coincidentally?) coinciding with the release of this film - the Supreme Court has ruled against this type of war crime.

A must see film for anyone living in the modern world.

6 out of 5.

Is this as good as In This World?

Michael Winterbottom is kind of an on and off director for me.

I probably won't be able to see it until DVD, but I will look out for it.

I've only seen his aforementioned Tristam Shandy and vastly under-rated Code 46 - but I thoroughly enjoyed each of these three films...

Bradley, see In This World and 24 Hour Party People.

While I'm not sure what you'll think about 24, I think you will definately love In This World.

Code 46 was one that was a little hollow for me. Well done, well put together, the acting is nice but I didn't feel the film had the weight or the tension necessary for the subject matter he was playing with.

I haven't seen Cock & Bull yet. It is on DVD on July 11th.

Despite all this though, I think 9 Songs was the single worst film of 2004.

I've only heard good things about 24 Hour Party People, and I hereby accept your recommendation for In This World.

(Unfortunately, I rarely watch DVD's...)
