Finally got around to seeing it today, it wasn't too bad either. Sure it was chaotic and parts of it were a disaster, but other parts were interesting. All in all it was pretty much an empty but heavily stylized vampire film. A lot of it had a "been there, seen that done better" feel, but overall it was pretty slick. I'll give it a B-

Okay, so I finally saw the American cut. Not a huge difference, actually. The last half is sped up a bit more, but it still doesn't fix the pacing issues. You feel every minute of the film. The subtitle tricks are quite cool, but weren't used enough in my opinion.
So, yeah, it's still essentially the same film. Beautiful and highly stylized with a lot of creativity, but extremely muddled.

A C from me. As I said, the sequel is a bit better.

I enjoyed this movie well enough for the first half, but it lost me during the second. I think it would have a lot more impact if you had been raised in Moscow, to get some of the subtle cultural and political echoes which are clearly built into the story.
3 out of 5.

Day Watch review.
The movie is not that good, but that is coming from someone who disliked the original, so...
It is admittedly better than the first one.
