OH JOY! It's playing at my cousin's theatre! Yay. I'd say there's a 75% chance I'll see it next weekend.
And since my mom only takes me to that theatre, I'll see it there, for free.

torrino, I don't think you've ever made one single post about me without referring to AVP. That's amazing.
Fine. Replace AVP with Blade: Trinity. Anyways, I'm seriously interested in your response. I'm sure Blade: Trinity was style over substance...as was AVP. Unless you count CGI as substance...

An obligation that Yimou needs to let go of with these two. Sorry, saw it tonight, and while it was neither as visualy cliche as Hero or as politically offensive as Hero, it wasn't all that great either.

Not bad.
Any idea how much CTHD and Hero made there?

Hero is holding pretty much all the box office records for domestic movies in China, while Titanic is holding the overall record. I believe Hero earned about twice of what HOFD did: 300 million RMD, or 36 million dollars. Not sure about CTHD.

Personally, I thought it was gorgeous visually, even moreso then Hero (that could be thanks to it being filmed about three years later though). The story also flowed better though. However, the movie had many moments (especially as it went on) that were extremely cheesy, melodramatic and over-the-top. It was non-stop in the final half hour. Also, the titular weapons are about the most convienient plot device ever. Whenever the heroes are about to be killed, the daggers fly out of the magical world of Screenplay transition and save them right in the nick of time! Between this and Hero, Yimou is turning into the Chinese Michael Bay for overblown action epics... B-

Should I? Contrary to how I often choose to present myself, I don't actually know everything and everyone. Only 99%
All I know is a I have found a partner in crime who also thought the final veeeery draaaaawn out scene in the snow had no emotional resonance and should have been a whopping 10+ minutes shorter.

MovieDude is only the poster from BOM with the most posts! (until Pinkpanther beat him after his unnecessary banning). We have a living legend here.

While the film isn't as... epic as Hero or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, it's still quite as good. Zhang Ziyi gives her best performance yet, I'm really surprised because this is a very difficult role to handle. While she wasn't blind (Mei wasn't blind either... ), she sure did handle it with grace. I also thought Takeshi Kaneshiro was pretty good. I was really engaged in the story and the action scenes were quite good. I'm also glad I went into the theatre with a low expectation, I don't know how I would have reacted to the film with a very high expectation. While many say the dialogue was cheesy, I don't think it was really sappy... I thought the movie handled it's emotional situations pretty well. I didn't love it as much as Hero or CTHD, but it's pretty darn close.

Y'know, quite honestly, at the end, I wasn't entirely sure who had died at what point.
Anyways, yeah, I DID have a whole ton of posts back at BOM, but I don't exactly want my calling card to be "quantity, not quality" . Anyways, thanks for the warm welcomes dolce, I don't think I've met you either, but anyone whose able to write as good of reviews, AND ones I agree on, AND have a name based on such a classic, can't be bad. *Taps wineglass against dolcevita's* Here's to Fellini.

Here's a list of different place naming the best of 2004. A lot of them have HOFD as the #1 movie.

HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS was an excellent film, better than HERO, IMHO. The "Echo Game" was fantastic, the leads were dynamic, and the cinematography was heartbreakingly gorgeous. Recommended. Its a pity Sony Pictures Classic betrayed their film by expanding too rapidly.
