Post The Suffragette

I think what with all the recent feminism-related press in Hollywood, The Suffragette is well poised to take home some awards this season. It has a great cast to propel it too; none other than Meryl Streep, and Carey Mulligan is definitely taken seriously as an actress. But the topic is just perfect for what's happening in Hollywood now, right?

At least this year I think it started with Viola Davis' win, then with Geena Davis' comments, and now with Ashely Judd's comments, it just seems to me that the snowball has begun. By the time Oscar season is upon us, I think it could make the difference for The Suffragette being forgotten or The Suffragette being showered with praise. It also has the "landmark event in history" card on its side.

As I know you have a special interest in the film, what say you, David?

And what say you, rest of KJ?

The only reason I mention it is because outside of Carey Mulligan mentioned as a possible candidate for nomination, The Suffragette isn't being included elsewhere.

While positive, reviews are not strong/passionate enough for it to be a Best Picture front-runner, though it may still slip into the field as a nominee, and almost every "prognosticator" seems to agree Carey Mulligan will receive a Best Actress nomination.

I am very excited to see it myself.

Its relevance or topicality helps in certain arenas, hurts in others. Note the 5.7/10 rating at the moment on IMDb, which is an absurdly bad early rating for a mostly well-regarded drama on the site. The Walk, for example, is at 7.9. Room is at 7.4. Hardcore "men's-rights" types are crowding the box with one-out-of-ten votes for Suffragette.

Carey Mulligan in a period piece and David is excited.

Next thing you know, Algren is creaming his pants over the new Stallone action flick and I can't wait to see whatever Christopher Nolan makes next.

The film is starting to find its footing again it seems after the initial waves of reviews weren't outstanding (it was barely fresh on RT whereas now its over 80%). I agree with David that it may not sneak in a BP nom but Mulligan will get it and this is Streep's only chance at a nomination this year.

Oh I agree but then again you can never count her out 100% when she has any film come out during Oscar season.

Streep is literally in Suffragette for under 5 minutes. She's not getting nominated for it even with how weak the Supporting Actress category is.

Oh didn't realize it was that small. That's not even supporting at that point, that's just a guest spot.

Beatrice Straight won an Oscar for a five-minute role in Network.

But Streep will not be nominated for this. Helena Bonham Carter seems to be the film's supporting-actress contender.

It's too bad this isn't doing very well in limited release. I wonder how badly it will flop in its expansion this weekend.
