The reviews for this are simply fantastic, and it seems like it could be an audience pleaser and do very well at the box office as well. I think this could get a nomination for Best Picture.

Sci-fi movies are only nominated if they get "best film ever" type of buzz. Maybe if Matt Damon was a historically significant Brit who helped England withstand Hitler, then goes through a physical transformation due to disease and then gets stuck on Mars it would have a shot. I haven't read the book, so I can't say if this happens or not.

I just think it's starting to look like a weak year for best picture contenders.

If it stays at 8-10 nominees it can get one of the last spots but with 7.3 average rating and 75 Metacritic I would say critically it's well liked not loved by critics

That's better than Gladiator.

The word of mouth for this movie is going to be sensational and it should play for a long time. I don't think it can be ruled out.

I doubt a popcorn movie can seriously contend for any major awards. Nominations, maybe. Wins, no no.

It will get tech noms but not the big ones, the movie was good IMO but not great.

Was surprised to see that Sasha Stone of awardsdaily.com listed this as the #1 lock for a Best Picture nom............ whaaaaaaaaaaaa...???? Also supposedly likely in Director, Actor, and Adapted Screenplay, among others.

I thought it was pretty flawed? Kind of enjoyable but ultimately a let down. Maybe I was too hyped on the book and was always going to be disappointed.

It wouldn't deserve an acting nomination. Damon was good but not GREAT. None of the performances in the film were award-worthy, IMO.

Neither was Bullock's in Gravity.

Bullock was great in Gravity. She totally made me feel for her, I'd never seen her in a film so vulnerable.

I absolutely felt for Matt Damon in The Martian as well.

The Martian is not an artsy, Oscar bait film like Gravity. It is a very well received blockbuster, and to get a nomination in those movies, your performance must be completely innovative, like Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight or Johnny Depp in The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Yes, Damon has a very uphill battle here. But I would not entirely rule it out if the season is weaker than usual.

I could see the film making it into Best Picture and Best Actor now, if it maintains the buzz and other candidates disappoint.

Picture is much more likely than actor, IMO.

Post subject:  Re: The Martian

I think they're both equally likely. If there's passion for one, there will be passion for the other. That said, I could easily see one getting in without the other.

The Martian at least doesn't pretend it's an art movie like Gravity did. It runs with its concept the best it can. Whatever Gravity got TM deserved also. Also Damon >>>>>> Bullock.

By now I am starting to believe it will get a handful of nominations as well, including Picture, Actor, Adapted Screenplay...

I'm also on The Martian bandwagon. It is a true success story. I'd love it to reach $250m and get 7-8 Oscar nominations.

The Golden Globes have agreed to let this film compete as a comedy/musical. Ha.
