The film got great receptions out of Cannes on Saturday. Blanchett seems to be locked in for a nom given her Oscar pedigree, and the praise on Rooney Mara is equally strong. Todd Haynes is no stranger to Oscars either, and it's backed by Weinstein. It has Far From Heaven vibe, and I could see the following noms:

Picture
Director
Actress
Supporting Actress
Adapted Screenplay
Cinematography
Score

Blanchett will amost certainly be nominated, but I doubt she will pull a DDL just yet and win her third.

Though it'd be very very ironic if she did, considering her first Oscar was for playin the 4-time Oscar winner Katherine Hepburn and she might be heading in the same direction. 40-50 years on, someone will hopefully win an Oscar for playing Cate Blanchett.

That is fascinating to think about. How would a biopic of her even play out? Up to this point I don't see anything in her history that screams a biopic could be made. Whereas someone like Angelina Jolie with her UN work and personal cancer history is a situation that I could see someone making a biopic.

So far 10 reviews on MC, 6 100s for a score of 98. On RT, it's 100% with 9.3 average after 10 reviews.

Yeah, a Blanchett biopic would be shit and unneeded. Then again, Blanchett didn't play Hepburn in a biopic about Hepburn if I remember correctly.

Yeah, it's a biopic about Howard Hughes. Movie stars, regardless how big they were, hardly get any biopics focusing on them; it would have to be related to something or someone outside Hollywood and in their lives that are more fascinating.

Unless you are James Dean or Elvis or Chaplin or Marilyn or Peter Sellers.

Which is to say: tragic, volatile, THE MOST ICONIC PERSON IN THE WORLD, and/or insane.

Blanchett is "just" an elegant, highly regarded actress who seems to lead a fairly quiet life.

I am not saying it will happen, just that it would be funny if it did.

So which of the current actors are biopic-worthy? I suppose there will be one about Nicholson one day. Charlie Sheen maybe. Tom Cruise definitely with all the Scientology stuff.

I really can't see any of those getting a biopic. But Arnold's life deserves one. The only problem with that is that he already lives his life out in the open, so there may not be much to see. The thing about Monroe, Dean etc. is that I guess people didn't know much about their lives. Modern technology means that our superstars are no longer as mysterious (and therefore worthy of a biopic) as the stars of yesteryear.

It'd be 20-30 years down the line, by the generations will not know that much about them anymore.

Cruise will be in his Eastwood stage at that time. They'll still know him. Hey, what about Eastwood? Would that be an interesting biopic? I don't really think so. He is just a republican film director. Nothing special there.

You need drugs or viokent behavior or jail or some really weird shit to justifiy a biopic. That's why the likes of Cruise or Sheen fit. Nicholson because he is a legend. We'll see a Brando biopic too, one day.

Post subject:  Re: Carol

I don't think Cruise will ever let that happen. Nor will his estate. Hence why you'll never see a Michael Jackson biopic.

Sheen is a money-grabbing cunt, so is his family, so I could see that happening. Brando and Nicholson, nah, I don't think people care enough about them.

I don't know if you need the rights for all biopics. When Oliver Stone made W. he probably didn't get any rights from Bush.

Yeah, interesting. But surely it is illegal to make a film about someone where you are pretty much insulting them (which is what a Cruise biopic would be because of all the Scientology stuff).

Yes, you can always be sued for defamation and, if you lose, ordered to pay up. But I am not sure you can prevent a film from being released, unless you make outrageous accusations that are not supported by any facts.

A Michael Jackson biopic would be complicated if the song rights are withheld. Even though it is a solid film, Jimi: All Is by My Side never entirely overcame the stigma of being a Jimi Hendrix biopic without "Purple Haze," "All Along the Watchtower," etc.
