No. Being based on real people and events does not render a screenplay adapted automatically. It has to be adapted from an actual credited source such as a novel or memoir, a play, another film, etc. |

This is quite a competitive category this year. Boyhood, Birdman, and The Grand Budapest Hotel seem safe, but then we have: Foxcatcher A Most Violent Year Mr. Turner Nightcrawler Selma Whiplash Selma has a bit of an authorship controversy. The original writer (a white man, cue sinister music  ) exercised his contractual right to receive sole credit despite reportedly significant contributions by director Ava DuVernay.

The Artist, Million Dollar Baby, Chicago, Gladiator, Titanic, The English Patient, Braveheart, Unforgiven, Platoon, The Deer Hunter and many others have won BP, without winning Screenplay. I actually think that if it isn't The Grand Budapest Hotel, it will be Birdman. |

Could Mr. Turner still get a nom? I looked at Leigh's previous films and Another Year also got a screenplay nod without almost any precursors. |

I believe a solid dark-horse candidate is A Most Violent Year. Based on the advertising, it seems very writer friendly. The American Dream theme. The colorful, hard-edged wife character. The conjuring of this Sidney Lumet-style period milieu. And they nominated J. C. Chandor for Margin Call. |
