Streep talked about how Disney “supported an anti-Semitic industry lobbying group” and called him a “gender bigot.” She read a letter that his company wrote in 1938 to an aspiring female animator. It included the line, “Women do not do any of the creative work in connection with preparing the cartoons for the screen, as that task is performed entirely by young men.”

I am not sure a speech introducing and feting a friend and peer was the most suitable or tactful vehicle to express her concern, but it is an interesting...tension. It is fascinating (and ballsy?) how the Mouse House has created an expensive, A-list ode to itself, its founder, and its own "redemptive power" and triumphantly sold it as a stately biographical drama. The film is such a whitewash (of Walt, of P. L. Travers, of alcoholism, of grief, of old-school Hollywood), it would see a white wall and demand it be painted whiter still.
