I wonder if these groups truly believe Scarlett gives one of the best performances of the year in Her or if they are motivated more by the novelty of citing such an iconic performer for a vocal performance (and by extension weighing in in favor of honoring non-traditional performances).

I can't hep but think that these noms are a way to make a statement.

Lol, there is a 2/5 match between Picture and Director. What happened there? Andb Tucci's nom has got to be the most off-kilter/surprising nod this awards season so far.

I dunno, though. Based on how well it's performed so far at all these awards, people really love Her.

The film, yes, no doubt. But, sight unseen, noms for Scarlett do seem to carry a "statement"-character.

45 years later, Douglas Rain is wondering where his nominations were.

Short Term 12 has been getting a lot of love this season.

Really pleased to see Adele Exarchopoulos nominated.

I'm still praying that Before Midnight will somehow be recognized at the Oscars. Can't someone super rich start a campaign for the film and send out screeners to people? This is the greatest trilogy love story of all time, people! Heh.

I don't even think the film has a chance of winning Best Adapted Screenplay anymore, which is just such a shame to me. I hope to be pleasantly surprised - and for Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke, and Julie Delpy to all be honoured together for the trilogy with that one Oscar.

Peace,
Mike

I actually believe it has a strong chance at a Best Picture nomination.

The Matrix Trilogy had a better love story.

Winners:

Best Picture
Her

Best Director
Alfonso CuarĂ³n (Gravity)

Best Actor
Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club)

Best Actress
Brie Larson (Short Term 12)

Best Supporting Actor
Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club)

Best Supporting Actress
Scarlett Johansson (Her)

Best Screenplay
Spike Jonze (Her)

Best Ensemble
American Hustle

Best Documentary
Stories We Tell

Best Breakthrough
Brie Larson (Short Term 12)

Looks like Detroit wasn't a big fan of 12 Years a Slave. Brie Larson scores another success. At this point, she's probably 7th in the Best Actress race, behind Blanchett, Bullock, Dench, Thompson, Streep and Adams, though no GG or SAG noms are hurting her. I hope she can score a nod with the BFCA.

Maybe it's a way of pushing performances like Serkis's closer to Academy level recognition.
