Nineteen films will compete for a nomination, which means there will be five nominees in the end. The contenders are:

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2
The Croods
Despicable Me 2
Epic
Ernest & Celestine
The Fake
Free Birds
Frozen
Khumba
The Legend of Sarila
A Letter to Momo
Monsters University
O Apóstolo
Planes
Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Rebellion
Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury
The Smurfs 2
Turbo
The Wind Rises

It is so strange to me an animation/live-action hybrid such as The Smurfs 2 is even eligible. Anyway, I predict:

The Croods
Despicable Me 2
Frozen
Monsters University
The Wind Rises

Though I may end up replacing The Croods with one of the lower profile foreign titles.

My current prediction as well, but I guess one of the lesser-known titles will bump The Croods off the list. Sadly.

Ernest & Celestine has a solid chance of getting in over The Croods or DM2. It's being released by GKIDS, who have gotten in other foreign animated films before (Secret of Kells, A Cat in Paris, Chico & Rita), and they're getting it a solid American version dub (includes Forest Whitaker, Lauren Bacall, Paul Giamatti and others). The only issue I guess is that the voting is being expanded to voters outside of L.A., which could make it harder to push smaller films like that to a nomination.

If something is being bumped out, it'll be The Croods, I'm afraid. Mainly because DM2 is such a monstrous hit. I'd much rather MU or DM2 to be bumped out than The Croods, though.

MU is better than all of those.

Look like Frozen will win.

It'd deserve it.

Frozen will walk away with it and not even break a sweat.

There's starting to be a backlash against it ... the main character makes planes for Japan in WWII. "It's like making a movie about the guy who made the ovens for Germany!" one critic said.

Might be a great film; haven't seen it yet. But yeah, that might color some views.

I'd give the odds to Frozen.

Miyazaki is very anti-war though and critical of Japanese aggression. See the article in http://www.scmp.com/news/asia/article/1 ... m?page=all. And this being his last film does give it a fighting chance. If he hadn't won for Spirited Away, the film would have definitely been the frontrunner.

I do not believe the controversy will spread much beyond a certain niche. The Wind Rises can still easily, easily win.

But it's not better than Frozen or Monster's University, you see.

Frozen is a phenomenon and Miyazaki has won before. I believe the Academy will reward Disney after Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph didn't win.

Is Frozen too big of a hit to get the Oscar?

LOL if Planes gets nominated.

Well, we all know that won't happen.

It looks to be Frozen, Monsters University, The Wind Rises, Despicable Me 2 and The Croods with Ernest & Celestine being a dark horse. I can only hope that The Croods won't get bumped off the list.

I have a strange feeling this year Academy could give us a lot of WTF choices.
