I do!

And it's a better Best Picture winner than Argo, The King's Speech and Slumdog Millionaire.

The Artist is better than (since 2000) Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, Return Of The King, Million Dollar Baby, Brokeback Mountain, No Country For Old Men, Slumdog Millionaire, The Hurt Locker, and Argo.

In terms of actually leaving a mark and being remembered years from now, The Artist probably won't top any on that list. Even The Hurt Locker will at least be remembered for the Best Director win for Bigelow (first woman to win).

I liked The Artist, Argo, Slumdog and The King's Speech a lot.

Nope. Never saw it. It was a win to reestablish to the public that the Academy are uptight toffs.

I would not have awarded it the Best Picture Oscar, but The Artist is a charming enough movie.

The Artist is far from a snobby art picture - - it's a crowd pleaser.

This. It is not even the best movie about the magic of cinema that was nominated that year. Hugo is superior to The Artist in almost every way, particularly as a love letter to the movies. But it is nearly impossible to dislike The Artist.

The Artist is one of the better BP winners recently IMO.

The Hurt Locker doesn't hold up that well in my mind. It's like oh yea... the bomb movie

The Artist is still a wonderful movie. I remember I saw it in theaters like six or seven times (my art theater played it forever, they have one screen and it is a block away from my apartment). It always made me so happy. ;) And it is so not an uptight snobby movie at all.

The Academy is terrible at picking the most memorable quality movie of the year.

But the problem there is: what do they pick for 2011? None of the movies nominated left much of a footprint in the public consciousness, with the possible exception of The Help. (And just imagine what an absolute shitstorm would have gone down on the internet if that one had won.)

And to answer the question of the thread, yes. I re-watched it on Netflix back in January, and loved it about as much as I did when I saw it on the big screen a year earlier. That said, it feels like the most random, out-of-leftfield Best Picture winner in the 15 years I've followed the Oscars. At least The Hurt Locker had Kathryn Bigelow and the David vs. Goliath angle with Avatar propelling it to victory. On the other hand, The Artist had, what? Critical acclaim? Relatively weak competition? Hollywood desiring a self-congratulatory circle jerk? All three applied, but they seem like weak narratives.

Hugo should have smashed, the film is awesome.

War Horse was my favorite of the 2011 nominees.
