This is a STACKED year. I have seen four definite contenders already: Oz The Great and Powerful, Star Trek into Darkness, Iron Man 3 and Oblivion. Might be the most contenders-heavy year ever. |

One reason I voted for Elysium is I believe it will be received very warmly by critics and stand out as an original science fiction film envisioning a futuristic world versus the exhausted ground represented by, say, Thor: The Dark World. |

Gravity is a pretty glaring omission here - it actually has a solid chance at winning if it breaks into the major categories. |

Say what you will about Man of Steel, but it is not universally beloved like that film was. The Oscars are about politics and as great as the effects were, I'm sure that a movie nominated for Best Picture like Gravity will win instead. |

That said, I also don't think Man of Steel will win. I think The Hobbit might win it this time, if the effects of Smaug are a knockout. |

Oh, right, 2007 was At World's End, not Dead Man's Chest. |

Transformers was the deserving nominee and should have won. The Golden Compass' win is a joke, the biggest I have ever seen in this category ever since I have started following the Oscars. |

I did like the effects in The Golden Compass (one of the few good things actually), but yeah, Transformers should have beaten it. It's way too early to say what will win the category this year. I'll be rooting for The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug. Pacific Rim will probably get a nom. Iron Man 3 and/or Man of Steel could. Personally I'm rooting against Oz, though the effects were generally great, the Wicked Witch was done so poorly that I really don't want it to win anything. List as of now... Hobbit Pacific Rim Star Trek Man of Steel Iron Man 3 But that could change a lot by the time the awards are here. |
