Never too early to start this thread.

The Weinstein Company has purchased Fruitvale (the true story of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old Bay Area resident who was shot down by BART officers at the Fruitvale subway stop early on New Year's Day 2009) at Sundance starring Michael B. Jordan and Octavia Spencer for a $2.5 million price.

The movie premiered to a rapturous response and I think we're already looking at an awards contender.

Hopefully 12 Years a Slave gets Steve McQueen and Michael Fassbender the Oscar attention they deserve.

Also I'm wondering if The Secret Life of Walter Mitty will get anything or if its meant to just be entertainment for Christmas time.

I've read the script - it's fairly light entertainment. I don't see any Oscar nominations.

Terry Gilliam films rarely fare well with the Academy outside technical categories. Maybe Best Original Screenplay if it is incredibly well-received.

The Monuments Men and The Wolf of Wall Street look like obvious big players.

I mean THIS cast for The Monuments Men:

George Clooney
Daniel Craig
Bill Murray
Cate Blanchett
Jean Dujardin
John Goodman
Bob Balaban
Matt Damon

Gilliam will have to be recognized eventually.

Hehe, I don't know how often this has been said before. It was said with Shutter Island, with Revolutionary Road, with Django...

Perhaps Leo will invite the Academy over to his parlor for a little chat.

If SLP/David O. Russell doesn't win this year and the film is made in time, his next movie has to be among the early frontrunners, if it's not the frontrunner http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1800241/

Cast: Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Jeremy Renner, Amy Adams and Louis CK

That's soooo Oscars

Awards are being given out at Sundance...

Dramatic Grand Jury Prize: Fruitvale
Audience Award: Fruitvale
Directing: Jill Soloway, Afternoon Delight
Screenplay: Lake Bell, In a World...
Jury Prize for Acting: Miles Teller & Shailene Woodley, The Spectacular Now
Cinematography: Ain't Them Bodies Saints

I think Precious is the only movie in recent memory to win both the grand jury prize and the audience award, so Fruitvale is looking strong already.

I'm glad that film "On the Road" didn't win, it looked like a generic period mess and artistically cantankerous claptrap.

Was On the Road eligible for any Sundance awards this year? Did it even play there?

Didn't it say some or another about being in some festival in its trailers, I remember it being Sundance.

Hopefully Fruitvale has Octavia Spencer doing more than just playing a stereotypical angry black woman like in The Help.

Nice to see some recognition for Afternoon Delight and The Spectacular Now.

The Kerouac novel?

Wasn't it on the festival circuit last year? None of those were Sundance I think. Cannes and Toronto spring to mind.

I'm probably wrong, I just remember it being a major player in some festival from its trailer that was showcased prior to my two showings of Lincoln, I didn't pay attention to what particular festival it was playing at.

Ah I see, now I vaguely remember the trailer.
