Ben Affleck's nomination for Best Actor is surprising, yet also not. Since people love the film so much, it seems natural they should also love or at least admire his performance, right? Since he is the lead. A similar scenario to Clint Eastwood's Best Actor Oscar nomination for Million Dollar Baby.

Joaquin Phoenix roars again after a bit of an absence.

These are solid in general. I am pleased by Anna Karenina's strong technical showing and also its nomination for Outstanding British Film. Very respectable, and no one can say different.

I am also relieved to see Marion Cotillard cited. People at Awards Daily were starting to float the idea she might fall out of the race at the last moment, but between this, her Golden Globe nomination, her Screen Actors Guild nomination, etc., she seems safe as can be.

The Impossible is nowhere to be found. Lincoln's nomination count is high, but no love for Steven Spielberg himself.

They also have a Rising Star award for which the public votes. The nominees are:

Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene, Silent House)
Andrea Riseborough (Shadow Dancer, W.E.)
Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi)
Juno Temple (The Dark Knight Rises, Killer Joe)
Alicia Vikander (Anna Karenina, A Royal Affair)

I voted for Vikander.

No nom for Keira, sorry. But it got a nom for Original Music ;)

The Denzel Washington snub for Affleck is weird (and that's coming from someone who loved Argo).

Oh and I voted for Juno Temple.

Weird how Django got nominated for best editing, but not best picture. The editing was easily the worst part of that film.

Life of Pi performed very well. It could end up with 10+ noms on Thursday.

No Spielberg for director is a little weird. Also no sound for Zero Dark Thirty.

The BP lineup here matches up with DGA, indicating these five films are indeed strongest and would have likely be the nominees in a 5-nominee year.

Indeed. And five other awards, including Outstanding British Film.

As for Denzel Washington, I read he has never received a nomination here. Not for Glory or Malcolm X. Not for Training Day.

Skyfall could have done better. Casino Royale scored Best Actor and a Best Adapted Screenplay nods.

Also surprised how little love The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel has received.
