 Best Visual Effects 2011
Yeah I've always liekd this categry and this year we've actually got a very strong field.
Remember, it is five nominees now.
What I'm thinking:
Locks:
Rise of the Planet of the Apes Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2
Very likely:
Transformers: Dark of the Moon
Up next:
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Immortals Thor
One of the upper three won't get a nom, IMO and I think it'll be Thor.

 Re: Best Visual Effects 2011
Tree of Life could score a nomination but I'm not convinced that it'll be recognized if only because the effects are so brief and not directly connected to the primary narrative. It sounds like they did a lot more effects than what we saw based on the earlier rumors that there would be a concurrent IMAX film released, and judging by The Golden Compass's win montage that showed off the deleted ending sequence these can be factored in too.
Still, my money is on Weta very deservingly winning this year... Although a double nom for Tintin and Apes could mean Harry Potter wins this as a consolation prize.

Hmm, then maybe... Adventures of Tintin Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II Rise of the Planet of the Apes Tree of Life Transformers: Dark of the Moon (though I'm not sure if the Academy likes this franchise much)

 Re: Best Visual Effects 2011
Every single of the Pirates films has been nominated for Visual Effects so far and that with three nominees each time...

 Re: Best Visual Effects 2011
The shortlist is out:
"Captain America: The First Avenger" "Cowboys & Aliens" "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" "Hugo" "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol" "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" "Real Steel" "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" "Sucker Punch" "Super 8" "Thor" "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" "The Tree of Life" "X-Men: First Class"
I'm betting it'll be Potter, Hugo, Apes, Transformers, and Tree of Life.

 Re: Best Visual Effects 2011
I agree. Or maybe Super 8 over Transformers.
Apes for the win, half or more as a nod to Serkis' accomplishment. Hugo and Potter will dominate the other tech categories.
Shame Melancholia is already ineligible. Predictable, but still.

 Re: Best Visual Effects 2011
Random factoid: Since 1970, a Best Picture nominee nominated for Best Visual Effects has never lost the category.
Could be good news for Hugo.

Bit surprised Super 8 was cut so early.

No Thor, now THAT is surprising.
I'm thinking:
Hugo Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 Transformers: Dark of the Moon Rise of the Planet of the Apes Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Real Steel deserves a nod, but it won't get it.

Eh, Real Steel's effects were nice, but nothing too special. Transformers lite.

 Re: Best Visual Effects 2011
I'd replace POTC4 with The Tree of Life. Don't really see the former making it with worse box office and reviews from the previous installments. M:I4 should be a contender as well.

If Casino Royale couldn't make it, then so won't M:I-4, IMO.

 Re: Best Visual Effects 2011
Ghost Protocol seems more CG-driven than Casino Royale (the Kremlin exploding, the sandstorm), but I still don't see it getting in.

Casino Royale's year only has 3 nominees though. We'll have 5 this time.

Yeah, but 2006 was also a weak year for that category. 2011 was really strong.

 Re: Best Visual Effects 2011
Rule of thumb: if there's a BP contender on the shortlist, it's getting nominated and probably will win.
