Post Best Foreign Language Film
What are people's thoughts on this category? Any predictions? (Any predictions as to which film will beat obvious frontrunner A Separation, sending the Internet into a furor? ;) )

I still have the Dogtooth nomination in mind. It was very interesting to see them, with their new edginess-ensuring "safeguards" (different panels), go for such a wild choice.

My current predicted lineup:

Happy, Happy (Norway)
Le Havre (Finland)
Miss Bala (Mexico)
Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (Turkey)
A Separation (Iran)

I'm tempted to include The Flowers of War because it's by a name director and stars Christian Bale, but reviews haven't been very good. I could almost see them rebelling against it, too, because it stars such a famous British actor. It might not feel "foreign" enough, for want of a better phrasing. Another high-profile one I'm predicting to miss is Germany's submission, Pina by Wim Wenders. The nature of the picture--a 3-D collection of dance performances, more or less--doesn't seem to fit this category's usual M.O.

Shortlist down to nine:
Quote:
Belgium, "Bullhead," Michael R. Roskam, director;
Canada, "Monsieur Lazhar," Philippe Falardeau, director;
Denmark, "Superclásico," Ole Christian Madsen, director;
Germany, "Pina," Wim Wenders, director;
Iran, "A Separation," Asghar Farhadi, director;
Israel, "Footnote," Joseph Cedar, director;
Morocco, "Omar Killed Me," Roschdy Zem, director;
Poland, "In Darkness," Agnieszka Holland, director;
Taiwan, "Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale," Wei Te-sheng, director.
I guess a Gunslinger prediction is a kiss of death for a foreign language film.

I'm sorry, Norway. At least you're not Iran.

A Separation is probably going to win, and it would be much deserved, but I also reallllllly loved Footnote.
