Personally, I wouldn't count out A Separation - they like foreign language films, and this has dominated the Foreign Language Film awards like no other movie in a while. In a wide-open year like this, it could certainly sneak in, especially when lighter films are looking to dominate this category. And speaking of which, I'm not sure I'd call 50/50 a lock - it has a lot of other indie comedies to compete against this year.

Otherwise, really good analysis. :)

I really considered it because of LAFCA mostly...

But it opens so late in the game, on December 30th. Other foreign language films that have been nominated for their screenplays were Talk to Her, but that was Almodovar and it was released in November and The Barbarian Invasions and that was released in May.

Then we also had Pan's Labyrinth and Amelie, but those were all-around huge foreign language hits, so...

The writers branch is hipper than most, though.

And I'm sure there are A Separation screeners out. So the late release date doesn't mean too much.

Mhm. And I actually forgot about the LAFCA win, where in their 36 year history only four of their Screenplay winners didn't get nominated (Nashville, Return of the Secarus 7, Drugstore Cowboy, About Schmidt). In a year as open as this, it's certainly in the running.

I played with including Carnage too, but seeing how The Ghost Wirter was snubbed despite better critical reception and likely bigger box-office....I don't think it has a chance.
