Re: The Big Question: Will Drive get nominated for BP?
This one has me on edge too. If they do 10 I believe it will. I sure hope so. It could go either way. It has made most top 10 lists. I'll say yes.

Re: The Big Question: Will Drive get nominated for BP?
I want to say yes, but I have to say no. It seems very telling to me it missed with SAG and the Globes. This is one of those super-cool movies the critics adore, but which will prove too divisive/quirky for wider voting bodies.

Tough call....I'd say only if Gosling is nominated as well.

I doubt it very much.

Well it'll have the passion votes. I think it and Tree of Life's candidcy depends a lot on whether War Horse and Extremely Loud are real players.
I think EL could pull a Reader and come back from the dead to sneak in at the last moment over Drive and/or Tree of Life, personally

Re: The Big Question: Will Drive get nominated for BP?
I actually think its chances are really strong. It's making practically every top 10 list and has been getting tons of love this season. If there's 10 nominees it has to make it. I know there's a chance it won't, but I think there's a better chance it will. Like Shack said I believe it will have a lot of passion votes.

But there's such a divide between critics and the Academy. This is the perfect movie to illustrate the chasm. Academy fogies are not going to go for the whole meditation on violence by way of Thief era Michael Mann angle. It's candy for critics and Internet movie nerds, but not Academy friendly at all.
Drive's only Oscar shot is, "Oh, the winning Jewish chap from Broadcast News is playing a nasty villain! Love it! Stupid ending, though, and, oh, those long pauses!" Take it to the bank.

The Academy has gone for all types of films before and I imagine plenty Academy members are made up of genuine fans of film, and this is a movie for film fans. I just really think with all of the attention it has been getting that it will be kind of hard to ignore. We'll see though.

Neither Kill Bill film was nominated for Best Picture. Very similar situation, IMO.

I suppose. But there weren't just 5 spots then.
