Box office might be enough to get Damon in on this imo...

Damon gives a really good "movie star in his element" role a la Brad Pitt in Moneyball, but the movie is really slight and he's not getting in with all this competition.

I agree. I might also compare what Damon does in Zoo to Will Smith in The Pursuit of Happyness.

DiCaprio is mostly out at this point, IMO. No one loves J. Edgar. It's already a bit of a distant memory, isn't it? With Dujardin, Fassbender, Oldman, Harrelson all heating up, in addition to Clooney and Pitt, and DiCaprio not campaigning since he's Down Under filming Gatsby, I can't see him staying in the race for much longer.

I still see him getting in. Even if they don't love the film, they'll probably remember his performance.

I almost wonder if Gosling could get in for Drive. I think it's certainly possible at the Globes at least. The film has been getting some love so far this season, and it's really been Gosling's year.

I think Oldman will miss out now. Not enough buzz for his performance and Shannon and Gosling are pretty strong.

I disagree. Oldman has been campaigning, is a veteran long overdue for a nomination, and his film is HOT right now. Hot as in, a shitload of people are watching it. There is the matter of his performance supposedly being very inward and reserved and minimalist, but this can be overcome.

Plus, Tinker, Tailor is Focus' only dog in the hunt (except for Plummer's guaranteed Supporting Actor nomination for Beginners), so he and the film will have their full attention and might.

It's a very very unshowy and subtle performance.

I'm picking Michael Shannon to win this

Pitt, Clooney, and Dujardin are locked. Always had the suspicion that industry will not be as kind to Fassbender as critics would; still think he is likely, but not a lock. It's him, Shannon, and DiCaprio for the final 2 IMO, with Gosling on the outside looking in and Oldman fading fast.

Chances are DiCaprio will happen. It's the Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth: The Golden Age spot. The air of prestige, of "this has to be amazing, right?" inevitability, will be enough to score a nod despite disappointing reviews and tepid box office.

The fifth spot is between Fassbender and Oldman, IMO. The latter can still be revived by the Globes and BAFTA.

I'm still a bit worried for Fassbender here. It would be such a...typical snub. A very grim, tough performance by a young actor in an NC-17 indie drama.

Reminds me of when Ryan Gosling was being widely predicted for Lars and the Real Girl, but was randomly booted by Tommy Lee Jones in In the Valley of Elah. Hopefully Fassbender's Oscar arc is closer to Gosling in Half Nelson.

On the subject of Gosling, his role in this race is super-weird. A Broadcast Film Critics nomination for Drive, a Golden Globe nomination for The Ides of March... He's clearly in the 7th/8th position right now, but I'm not sure for which film.

New, then. Just come on most Academy member's radars. However you want to say it.

And 34 is quite young for a category which skews toward veterans.

This is all over the place. I have no idea who'll win. I suppose Pitt can be considered overdue, especially with his fine work in The Tree of Life as well. But is the performance in Moneyball that beloved?

Clooney could get his second, after probably narrowly missing out to Bridges two years ago.

Can't see them giving it to Gosling or Fassbender. If The Artist becomes a huge thing, though...Dujardin could take it.

My money's currently on Clooney, though.

I'm starting to believe in Pitt more and more. He's never won, and this would be a great, very movie-star, very charismatic, very American role to award him for.

This is between Pitt and Clooney, imo. I think SAG will paint a clearer picture.

I was actually just talking about this with someone today. I think Pitt will win for sure now, unless the race changes drastically in the next two months.

This would just be such a... boring film for him to finally win for. After years of 12 Monkeys and Fight Club and Burn After Reading and Inglourious Basterds and Tree of Life performances, he wins for Moneyball? Come on.

Except for the part where Moneyball is a great movie. And it might be his best performance, even if the film is more conventional than the ones you mentioned.

Yeah, no. Have we really lowered our standards to such a degree where Moneyball is considered "great"? Solid, decent, fine. But certainly not great.

*shrug*

It ain't just me...it had pretty universal critical and audience acclaim.

Pitt was fine in Moneyball - certainly not making fun of himself as Pacino seems to do in Scent of a Woman - but it just seems like a strange film to reward him for. I guess it is a very star-affirming performance.

If I had to bet, last year, on what film would get him his Oscar this year, I would've put my money on Tree of Life.

Would not have been a smart bet; how many people have won acting Oscars for a Malick film?

On the flip side, Bennett Miller's last film resulted in a Best Actor Oscar for its lead.

At the end of the day, I s'pose it ultimately was just too much for them to watch an NC-17 movie.
