I hate how they let British films into the foreign film category. :P It just feels wrong having The King's Speech compete against Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives.

I always find it odd when they do that. Technically it would be considered foreign, but to me foreign is when it's in another language with subtitles.

Anyway, nice to see other films get a chance to shine due to THE KING'S SPEECH and THE SOCIAL NETWORK being out of the main categories.

I wonder how they determine what's an American film and what's a British film. Isn't 127 Hours a British film? Or does the fact it stars an American and is set in America outweigh the fact it's directed and co-written by an Englishman?

Having a Best Foreign Language Film category is a lot...cleaner. The Golden Globes handle this category right. The Oscars, IMO, go a bit too far with all the one-film-submission-per-country business.

Many of the winners are hardly what I would consider "Indies" - - Black Swan, King's Speech, 127 Hours, The Kids Are Alright ???

Follow the money trail! TKS is produced by Bedlam which is UK based company. 127 Hours is a UK/US co-production which is why it can be counted as a US or UK movie. I'm guessing.

Winter's Bone is a great, small film. I would imagine these awards are designed for a film like Winter's Bone.

How is Winter's Bone winning big? For all I know, it won only two prizes for its supporting cast.

The film is heart-gripping and has a nice flow. The setting (rural Missouri) is atmospheric if you can look past its flawed inward-looking logic.

It won the second most awards of the night, so...leave me alone. :P

Yeah, all the main awards went to extremely high profile films, when the "little guy" in an indie awards show is winter's bone you know something's wrong.
