Will be announced on Monday.

Will it be the expected Nolan/Coens/Aronofsky/Fincher/Hooper line-up? Or will someone surprise and sneak in, like Boyle or O'Russell?

I hope David O. Russell sneaks in.

Nolan, Aronofsky, Fincher, and, unfortunately, Hooper seem safe. The Coens are the ones who could slip out, IMO.

The result is in:

Fincher, Aronofsky, O. Russell, Nolan, and Hooper

Good news for The Fighter. The 5 respective films very much established themselves as the top 5 pictures in the race.

Yay for Russell! :D One of the best living directors, very glad to see him recognized. I hope he's Oscar nominated, too.

Think this indicates Social Network, Black Swan, Inception, King's Speech and The Fighter are the top 5 in the Picture category.

Hooper's direction is overrated. I thought several of his stylistic decisions were downright distracting. The Burton-esque atmospherics. The claustrophobic, tight framing. The King's Speech called out for a fresh, loose, natural, Mike Leigh-esque touch.

I'd argue that True Grit is still ahead of The Fighter despite the DGA nom for Russell. But, well, we won't find out.

In the 5 BPs age, DGA always predicted the pictures better than the actual BD list, and The Fighter is more academy-friendly, so I definitely think The Fighter would make the top 5 in the old time, while Russell could be replaced by Coens or Boyle in BD.

Well, I'd remind you of 2008 (Nolan DGA nominee) or even 2007 when Sean Penn AND Julian Schnabel were nominated for the DGA as well (both films missed a BP nom). Or how about Bill Condon for Dreamgirls (I'd say that compares best here as most considered Dreamgirls a rock solid Top 5 contender as well :) )? All DGA nominees whose films missed a BP nod at the Oscars.

I think that True Grit's buzz just keeps building now that the movie's a huge success and it should dominate the techs as well.

I'd agree.
