Post BAFTA long lists
“The Long List” is the result of Round One voting by members of the Academy. The first round of voting reduces the films down to fifteen in each category. Round Two voting, which opens today, will reduce these fifteen contenders down to the five nominations in each category. The nominations for the Orange British Academy Film Awards in 2010 will be announced on Tuesday January 18th. Over 6000 members of the Academy vote in the three rounds to decide the “long list,” nominations and winners.

Below is the entire list of “long lists.” Note the five contenders in each category (except best picture) marked with an asterisk indicates the top selections, and the eventual nominees often end up showing one or two variations from those. Some surprise acting contenders to receive asterisks include Julianne Moore, Bob Hoskins, Miranda Richardson and Barbara Hershey, while Nicole Kidman, Hailee Steinfeld, Jennifer Lawrence and Melissa Leo all went sans asterisk.

Post Re: BAFTA long lists
Some interesting observations:

- Winter's Bone missed Best Director on the longlist which definitely does not bode well for her as far as getting support from the British branch goes. It's the only film that got on the BP longlist, but not on the BD longlist. Instead, Winter's Bone was replaced by Tim Burton for Alice in Wonderland (WTF?). Considering Jennifer Lawrence was not even among the top picks for Best Actress and all...I would not be surprised to see Winter's Bone completely shut out by the BAFTAs.

- Very very strong for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I remember La Vie En Rose got eight mentions on the longlists and The Lives of Others got nine, I think. Eleven is really strong and the film fairly well-received there...so who knows, maby we'll see several noms for it there.

- Five acting mentions for Black Swan...wow! The King's Speech's dominance was expected, but Black Swan's huge success is rather surprising.

- Alice in Wonderland is obviously going to get a ton of tech noms. Hell, Depp made it on the longlist as Best Actor! I mean, c'mon!

- Apparently they really liked The Kids Are All Right as Moore, bening and Ruffalo are all three among the top picks in their categories.

- It also seems like Danny Boyle will get help from the Brits for 127 Hours which pushes it above The Town and Winter's Bone in the Oscar race.

- No Tron Legacy in the longlist for Sound or Score!

Is there any way for The Social Network to win the BAFTAs?

I mean Atonement and The Queen suggest that there's no way, but...TSN is really really strong. That'd be the ultimate bitch slap if it did win, though.

It would be nuts. ;)

Maybe there's a possible scenario where the various British films--The King's Speech, Another Year, Made in Dagenham, 127 Hours--dilute the vote, and The Social Network sneaks in for the win.

I highly, highly doubt it, though.

Yeah, I think BAFTA is the key indicator this season.

Only if TSN wins. If The King's Speech wins that doesn't mean anything for The Social Network.
