So how many nominations will the biggies get this year?
This is what I could see happening:
The Social Network:
Best Picture Best Director Best Actor Best Adapted Screenplay Best Editing
Total: five niminations (like The Departed)
The King's Speech:
Best Picture Best Director Best Actor Best Supporting Actor Best Supporting Actress Best Original Screenplay Best Cinematography Best Editing Best Score Best Costume Design Best Art Direction
Total: 11 nominations
Inception:
Best Picture Best Director Best Original Screenplay Best Score Best Visual Effects Best Editing Best Cinematography Best Art Direction Best Sound Editing Best Sound Mixing
Total: 10 nominations
True Grit:
Best Picture Best Director Best Actor Best Adapted Screenplay Best Cinematography Best Editing Best Sound Edting Best Sound Mixing
Total: 8 nominations
127 Hours:
Best Picture Best Director Best Actor Best Adapted Screenplay Best Editing Best Cinematography
Total: 6 nominations
Toy Story 3:
Best Picture Best Animated Film Best Adapted Screenplay Best Sound Mixing Best Sound Editing Best Score
Total: 6 nominations

Re: So how many nominations will the biggies get this year?
I see two acting nominations for The Social Network--Garfield or Timberlake for Supporting Actor, as well as, of course, Eisenberg for Best Actor. Your choices for The King's Speech seem sound--maybe not Score, though. Inception, agreed If True Grit is up for Picture/Director/Screenplay/Editing, I'm sure it will receive more than one acting nomination. Damon? The girl? I find 127 Hours very hard to consider without having seen it. If it's more of a visceral/visual experience, might it miss Screenplay? A.R. Rahman's score could be nominated. Could Toy Story 3's score be disqualified? Doesn't it recycle a few themes?

I dunno about two acting noms for The Social Network. It really reminds me of The Departed which everyone thought would also get multiple acting noms...yet it didn't.
You might be right about TS3s score...I just assumed since almost all Pixar flicks got Score noms...

I don't know how much TS3 recycled music from previous music, but for a sequel it's not unusual to recycle and still get a nom - Harry Potter uses the same theme throughout and that didn't stop Azkaban from getting nominated after Philosopher's Stone got a nom.

Considering the initial enthusiasm I don't see how TSN won't be able to at least match THL's 9 noms.

Enthusiasm one way or another...it doesn't mean that much for a number of noms. It doesn't seem to be a tech heavy film. To get nine noms it needs a nom for Score (likely to be disqualified), two acting noms, a Cinemagraphy nom and at least one Sound nom. And I have a hard time seeing all of those happening.

Do you have to use the word 'biggies'?

A cinematography nod is a strong possibility for The Social Network, IMO.

Also The King's Speech should have a good shot at Art Direction, being a British period piece. Inception could get Art Direction too, considering The Dark Knight got one.

Oscars are no strangers to being easy when it comes to giving some movies extra nods that they probably don't deserve. Hence the The Hurt Locker comparison.

After that win, Oscars will never be the same for me.

Now The Way Back is slated for 2010 release, I could see the following noms for it:
Picture Director Adapted Screenplay Supporting Actor (Ed Harris) Cinematography Editing Art Direction

The Social Network better get Sound and Cinematography noms. The movie is gorgeously made.

You might be right about TS3s score...I just assumed since almost all Pixar flicks got Score noms... I would be very surprised if neither Garfield nor Timberlake were nominated. In fact I would predict that both are nominated before saying neither will be.
