Ahh, yeah, this category can actually be discussed based on trailers already. Besides it's fun. For the last awards, the winner was clear ever since Avatar has been announced. Maybe this year there'll be a closer race. Our potential contenders: Alice in Wonderland Clash of the Titans Iron Man 2 Robin Hood Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Inception The Sorcerer's Apprentice Tree of Life (apparently it has dinosaurs in it) The Last Airbender Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader Tron Legacy Gulliver's Travels Of course I might be forgetting some...but it looks likely that it'll be three of these. Iron Man 2 is the most likely one at the moment. It's a huge sequel to a huge predecessor which has been nominated for that Oscar. The effects work is looking good too. Inception is probably #2 at the moment. The shot of Paris folding onto itself is beautiful, not sure what else the film has got, though. But it's Nolan and TDK also got an Effects nom despite mostly having practical effects (something the Academy doesn't recognize often nowadays). The third spot is quite open...could be Alice considering how huge it is, but I don't think so. I would have said Narnia considering the first one was nominated and the similar The Golden Compass has won, but as Prince Caspian was shut out...probably not. Though the book serves as a great template for outstanding effects in this case. I don't think Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I will be nominated. The franchise is constantly shut out for this award. I think I'm going to go with Tron Legacy for now. |

Clash of the Titans Inception Iron Man 2 Gladiator won Best Visual Effects and Master and Commander was nominated, so Robin Hood shouldn't be ruled out. Tron Legacy is also a contender, of course. |

Oh, and Tree of Life is, as always, an enormous wild card. The rumors of dinosaurs are tantalizing. And isn't it set for an IMAX release? Interesting, yet I still hesitate to predict it. |

I would say 1. Iron Man 2 2. Inception 3. Tron Legacy Clash of the titans and The Last Airbender have some chance as well but I don't know. Frankly speaking I don't like when the Oscars selects a movie that had more practical effects than visual effects i.e. cgi. Inception has a city folding, lots of water and mind bending stuff but I don't think it is too hard to make those things look good except water. Oh btw is it just me? most visual effect films that end up getting nominated are summer or winter releases. |

I think Tron Legacy looks very good in graphics section this year, though it also looks similar to Speed Racer which was not nominated 1. Iron Man 2 2. Tron Legacy 3. The Last Airbender (I know this is surprizing but the series has a lot of war scenes and if they are executed all and well it could be a very good contender. Also that this is about a world that does not exist and thus it could be seriously graphic based) |
