Carey Mulligan. Though it's kind of hard to predict. It's sort of up in the air at this point. Helen Mirren and Meryl also have a good shot. Emily Blunt might get in for The Young Victoria. She won't win, but could very well be nominated.

Carey Mulligan.
Although I'm thinking Sandra Bullock could be a black horse in this race. She giving off Julia "Erin Brokovich" Roberts-ish vibe to me.

Mulligan is establishing herself as the critics choice, and with An Education looking very good at both BP and screenplay nom, I expect she will carry the frontrunner status all the way to an Oscar.

I think Streep now takes on the frontrunner status after winning Boston and NY Online. I didn't expect critics to go for her and thought she has to carry the support from GG and SAG to win, but she is winning important critics groups, she could become unstoppable.

Re: Straight-Up: Predict the Best Actress winner!
woah. i hadn't thought about this until now, but with Mulligan's performance not being even close to strong enough to warrant all the support it's getting (aka even if she wins the Globe and all that, i see her getting snubbed), with the Academy hating Meryl now, and with the Precious support being more focused on Mo'Nique, I wouldn't be at all shocked if Bullock won. Oy, this is a weak year for Best Actress.

Re: Straight-Up: Predict the Best Actress winner!
Sandra Bullock is just building up way too much momentum. The Blind Side looks like it will be at $225 m or potentially more. This will be an audience driven best actress Oscar. The Academy is bending all around to increase its appeal with an expanded best picture list. They are more receptive to the mainstream this year than they have been in years. I think Sandra Bullock's strong, strong year will give her enough momentum to take over the best actress race in the end.
Julia Robert's Oscar winning film role came shortly after a summer where she saw back to back box office smashes, and saw a huge comeback.
I think Sandra Bullock is riding a similar wave and am now convinced she's taking the best actress Oscar next year.

Re: Straight-Up: Predict the Best Actress winner!
There won't be any vote split for winner since Streep won't be nominated for It's Complicated.

I still don't think she can beat Sandra Bullock now, but either one of them winning would be huge. I believe that it would be only the second best actress winner in the past 14 years to not be under 40 (Helen Mirren being the only one to do so).

Sandra Bullock.
Established star. People like her. Role of a lifetime? Upset winner.

If The Blind Side is the "role of a lifetime," the Sandra Bullocks of the world should probably just kill themselves now.

A few years ago, Sandra Bullock was Harper Lee; quite nicely so, I may add.

Re: Straight-Up: Predict the Best Actress winner!
Put Sandra Bullock playing Julia Child and there wouldn't be BA talk. Stick Streep in Bullocks role in Blind Side and you'd still get the Oscar talk.
Tells me that the Julia role is the more fluffy one. Streep isn't winning BA for that piece. Sorry.
